Dean wanted Cas to have the best of everything.
He bought books and candles and a toaster, and good food - and he learned to cook it, too, with the help of glossy cookbooks. He bought patterned rugs and new pens and vases, and cushions, and cutlery, and clocks. He wanted Cas’ world to be beautiful, for everything he looked at to make him smile. He wanted their home to feel like home, full of their things.
It was all on fraudulent credit cards, of course, but - well. They did their work, and saved lives wherever they could. Dean had always figured that they deserved to make a few bucks, and it wasn’t as though those rich city bankers in their thousand-dollar condos couldn’t afford to lose a little here and there.
His greatest achievement was, without a doubt, the pillows. They were soft, made of a special kind of foam. If anything could make sleeping easier for the two of them, and chase away the strain of nightmares, these cushions were it. That’s what Dean thought, anyway.
On the first night of using them, Dean made sure they were set neatly. The dark blue pillowcases that he’d chosen looked good. He got into bed and laid down, filled with anticipation as Cas put on his pyjamas.
Cas got into bed, and snuggled into Dean, resting his head on Dean’s chest.
“Cas,” Dean said. “I bought new pillows?”
“I know,” Cas said, already sounding sleepy. “How do they feel?”
“Great,” said Dean, a little pointedly. “You should try yours.”
Cas didn’t move. The weight of his head was steady and reassuring.
“Mmm,” Cas murmured. “But you’re a better pillow.”
Dean huffed and rolled his eyes.
“Cas,” he said. “These are worth over a hundred dollars.”
Cas’ hand was resting on Dean’s chest, and his thumb moved in gentle circles.
“You’re worth more,” he said. Dean sighed.
“Cas, I’m just - I’m just trying to give you the best -”
“I already have the best,” Cas said. He reached for Dean’s hand, and wrapped their fingers together. “I have you.”
Dean blinked up at the ceiling for a second, and then laughed, and kissed the top of Cas’ head.
A few minutes later, they were both fast asleep.
