It was a week after Oleana had walked away from her father. A week that had simultaneously been one of the best, and one of the worst.
One of the best, because at last, she felt free. No longer crumpling under the pressure of debt, no longer having to scrimp and save every penny. No longer finding even the smallest coin on the floor a sign of good luck.
But the guilt was gnawing away at her. She could not help but think that she was leaving her father to a life of addiction, pain and destitution, and the thought was excruciating. But she simply could not deal with it any more. She had to get out, for her own sake. But it was taking its toll on her.
