As much as he knows that the Doom Patrol needs him, Gar can’t turn a blind eye to the return of his friend, his best friend. To Timothy, who despite keeping a level head is hurting and burying himself in work to stall on addressing his grief. To Cass who brings up dark memories of his own reckless way of coping with a loved one’s death. He had tried back then, but he had an entire team to be held accountable for, and with the aftershocks of the crisis he simply didn’t have time.
Just for the weekend. That’s what he tells himself. Steve and Rita are understanding, “Take mom out for dinner, willya, Steve?" It’s the first genuine smile he’s seen from him in months.
Anticipation wells inside him when they disembark from the jet onto the Tower’s roof. Kinda like watching the last two minutes of your favorite team playing their long time rivals; the rush is preparing you for something great…. Or terrible.
The fact Cass gives him the cold shoulder and Tim immediately retreats to the basement says a lot about how this weekend might turn out.
"It’s the trip," Vic tries to reassure him. “Tomorrow- we’ll all catch up, I swear.” He has to leave to go through the recordings, his own suggestion to the tin man, so he can’t blame him for being in a rush. It’ll do good him good to see that even though he was ‘gone’, he never truly left the time.
But of course, this left him alone on the couch, channel flipping since Prague didn’t have the same selection California did. He drops the remote on the cushion with a shrug when Clerks came on. He’s seen it too many times, but hey- can’t beat the classics.
"Wow, can’t imagine why the others didn’t want to spend time with you, tonight."
Gar rolls his eyes as black and silver vaulted over the couch, Dick told him all about her reformation- her return to the team. It’s probably for the best he retired as team leader before she arrived, he has a feeling she wouldn’t respect him nearly as much as she did Tim. “Nice seeing you too, Rose.” It took a while for Gar to accept Joey back in the day, he hadn’t even wronged the boy in any way. He finds it strange the same bile that worked its way up his throat is absent when the girl who nearly cut his throat jumps on the couch to watch TV with him.
"Don’t really watch TV or movies aside from what Eddie puts on."
He’s glad she ditched the mask, makes it easier to keep eye contact. “Well, if you’re up for amasterpiece do yourself a favor and stick around.” He smile comes naturally and one-eye just snorts in response. Stays in place, though, which means her interest was piqued. Rose adjusts her seating next to him, to make herself comfortable, confirmation that she intended to stay a while.
And between the critical side comments and chuckles, he thinks she actually half-likes it. It’s a mixture of him watching the movie and the expressions that twist and shape on her face; to get an exact read on the girl. The face watching shortens in duration as the movie progresses, so much so that the changeling is caught completely by surprise when a warm weight settles on his shoulder. He has to admit, he does jump a little, not every day you have the daughter of Slade snoozing and using you like a pillow. Her hands fist in his uniform as the the rest of her body shifts to lean on his. And she made it so far too.
A part of him feels like she should shake her awake, push her maybe. Another part that maybe he should shift into a fly and buzz right on back to his old room (is it being used?). But ultimately? The time spent between he and Rose wasn’t half bad, though she didn’t know it, he appreciated her spending the night with him. And god willing, she’d never have to find out.
They both had a reputation to keep, after all.
