CHICK FLICK is a site-specific installation by collaborating artists: Lisa g Nielsen, Cheryl Hamilton & Rose Casella. The three artists will be creating the work while in residence at the Falaise Fieldhouse over the entire month of July - and then share their finished installation on Saturday July 29th from 9pm-1am at 3434 Falaise Avenue, Vancouver BC Canada.
This is part of the Iris Film Collective IN HOUSE series.
The Falaise Fieldhouse is a 1950’s Vancouver Park caretaker home. The post war kitchen and pink tiled bathroom harkens back to the style reminiscent of June Cleaver’s ‘Leave it to Beaver’ domain. It immediately moves you back in time.
Using found 16mm footage that has women as subject (unsurprisingly limited on ebay) this collaborative team will attempt to transform the footage (and fieldhouse) into something that speaks more authentically to the female experience. Titles such as: Jobs for Women - 1942 , Volleyball Technique for Girls - 1957 , Correctol Women's Laxative Commercial - 1960's & Rhoda, the sitcom - 1974 will experience a mash-up as the artists explore the woman’s place.
Chick Flick is a slang term, often used dismissively, for the film genre dealing mainly with love and romance which is targeted to a female audience. It can be specifically defined as a genre in which a woman is the protagonist. CHICK FLICK, the installation, hopes to turn this idea on its head.
Lisa g is a founding member of the Iris Film Collective. She most enjoys creating work that has historical reference & social relevance. She has just completed a video installation at the new nə́c̓aʔmat ct strathcona library and is currently preparing to take the Our World filmmaking mentorship program NATIONAL! Lisa g wanted her IN HOUSE residency to be a fun summer collaboration. She wanted to play with found footage, loops and sound. In July she gets to live the dream.
Rosie C is a born wanderer with a thirst for variety and freedom. She is an Emily Carr graduate, studied in Venice, Italy at L’Accademia di Belle Arte and worked in Vancouver’s Film Industry in the days when Johnny Depp had good teeth and no facial hair. Her wanderlust landed her in Amsterdam, Netherlands where she has been working as a Creative Director, Art Director, Creative Producer and Writer on several documentaries, commercials, websites and book projects. She returns to Vancouver to work with her 2 favourite artists Lisa G & Cheryl H in hopes of kicking up some dust for women around the world by working on projects such as this one and laying down some roots in her hometown.
Cheryl Hamilton is a conceptual artist with a penchant for visual ingenuity. She imbues her artwork with a kineticism inspired by her education as an animator at Vancouver’s Emily Carr Institute. Cheryl enjoys the process of collaboration and experimentation and she tries to remain flexible in approaching mediums preferring the concept to dictate the ingredients. Cheryl works as one half of an artistic collaboration in a sculpture studio called i.e: on Granville Island and has continually returned to the medium of drawing and painting as it serves as the backbone of her art practice.
