it was dumb. such a dull and pathetic comment that ruined your day the moment you saw those words in that online article. you knew better than to get offended by shit that people post on the internet, but that one comment really got you:
guess her birth year isn’t a dealbreaker, huh?
you peek your head and see ross sitting so comfortably and coolly in front of his computer. you squeeze through the crack of the door, watching him for a minute or two.
“can I ask you something?” your voice trembles. anxiety twists in your stomach at the thought of asking, but it’s been on repeat in your mind.
ross re-racks the bass on the holder next to him, calm and steady. “‘course love.” he motions you over to a nearby couch, pulling you onto his lap. he places a few kisses on you, lovingly and gentle, and and suddenly your face feels hot, sure this is stupid to ask him, because…
how do you even say this?
ross’ eyebrows furrow in concern at your newfound quietness. “darling, whatever it is, you can tell me.” he smiles, pulling you closer to him. “it’s alright.”
your body shifts against his awkwardly. “do you ever think about being with someone else?”
he tenses, speaking slow. “no, why? is there someone else?”
you shake your head, “no! no.” never in a million years would you think that. you sigh, “I just meant… do you wish you were with someone, you know. older? more mature?”
he thinks for a moment. maybe. in a different life. one that’s boring. it’s a life you weren’t in. so,
“no.” he answers simply.
“what?” you’re shocked. you’d thought he would have a little more to say than a simple ‘no.’ “you’re not even going to try to fight me on this?”
he sighs, “i promise it’s not that big of a deal, doll.”
you huff, “people stare at me ross. actually stare! you don’t get it, feel it. wherever we are it feels like we’re doing something wrong, and i-“
his voice cuts through your thoughts, “do you think our relationship is wrong?”
“I-? no.”
“okay.” his thumb grazes your lips, “and are you happy with me?”
“yeah. of course.”
his eyes are on yours now, hopeful he can change your mind. “then that’s all that matters… us. “i love you. and that will never change y/n, no matter how old we are.” he speaks like the words are weightless, “i love you because you make me a better person. you make me so happy.”
“oh,” you sniffle. ross wipes a stray tear from your cheek. “I’m sorry baby. was just thinking about it a lot, dunno why...” you bury your face in his shirt, and feel his hand on the back of your head.
“it’s okay,” a small laugh rumbles in his chest. after a few minutes he speaks. “I can’t wait for our wedding day when I’m seventy and you’re, like, forty five.”
you lift your head and see his smile, almost giddy. he pulls you in, placing a soft kiss on your lips. “the three of us are going to have the best day of our lives.”
your eyebrow cocks, “the three of us?”
“mhmm.” he mumbles into your skin. “you, me, and my cane.”
In the quiet of the house as she snuck back up stairs, tray in hand, she could hear the faint sound of his snoring from behind the closed bedroom door and it made her smile. A light kick and the door opened to allow her in, hands full as well as her heart from the scene before her; his lips slightly parted and eyelashes delicately resting on his cheeks, at peace.
Once at the side of the bed and the tray was on the dresser she peppered him with soft kisses all over his face ‘Wake up baby,’ she softly spoke. He stirred, one of his eyes peaking open to find her gleaming down at him ‘happy birthday!’ her voice once again soft as she smiled then kissed him which resulted in a tired smile taking over his face.
Ross sat up and tried to pull her into him but she wriggled her way out and he pouted until she grabbed a tray from the dresser and lay it on his lap ‘VOILA!’ she grinned. Breakfast in bed.
‘Thank you my darling’ and he went to dig in but before he did he patted her side of the bed and she went and sat next to him cross legged. He stabbed a strawberry and brought it up to her lips ‘This is your breakfast,’ she emphasised dramatically ‘I don’t like to eat alone’ he had his best puppy dog eyes on as he replied. Giving in she took the strawberry and watched as he smiled and dug into the food himself.
‘That was great, thank you my love’ Ross and her sharing a kiss at his words. She pulled a box out from her bedside table then ‘What’s that?’ He asked inquisitively ‘Your present,’ she replied smiling and handing it to him. He looked at her suspiciously before unwrapping the gift to reveal a pair of socks with her face on them, the rumble of laughter he let out vibrated through the room. ‘I figured whenever you’re on tour and missing me you could wear these! even when performing because nobody would know!’ She beamed ‘They’re perfect,’ he said as he put them on ‘best birthday present ever’ Ross said as he pulled her into his chest, kissing the top of her head.
They stared at each other for a minute and smiled, these were the moments they both loved.
