At Cost Magazine - Blog Digest #2 - Greetings from the Holy Land

It’s a country so frequently in the headlines, but what do we actually know about Israel? It’s a country whose mere existence is controversial and its cultural products occasionally boycotted as a punitive measure for Israel’s domestic policy, but if you skip the geopolitics of the troubled Holy Land, Israel reveals a wealth of untapped talent. We get submissions all the time, and it just so happens that a lot of them happen to come from Israel (Tel Aviv to be more precise), so here’s a little digest of our favorite tracks that have come our way.

Garden City Movement - “She’s So Untouchable”

Once in tow with Israel’s pastel-hued diva Adi Ulmansky in Tel Aviv post-rock collective Lorena B, Garden City Movement like its name suggests, echoes a warm and aesthetically pleasing feel. Easing new-age sounds over a post-punk funk, their latest track “She’s So Untouchable” narrates a journey of self-discovery

Isadora - “Let it Burn”

The Tel Aviv trio of Isadora Kaufman, Dotan Moshanov and Yaron Goren, Isadora’s latest track “Let it Burn” is fired up with an analog synth buzz. It’s sweet glum lifted by the relentless sear of its boom clap beats, the roaring track is hook-heavy with its electropop perfection.

Lara Snow - “Sometimes It’s Enough”

The duo of Valery Sherman and Jonathan Harpak, Lara Snow’s sound is sharp to the touch over a juxtaposition of lo-fi glint. On track “Sometimes It’s Enough”, broken-beat dance elements are fed over a fuzzy synth sound and a sweet, vocal rawness.

For a little bit of a change, you can also check out their more recent video “I Like Snow” featuring Safra, a much harsher sound that combines the juvenile squeak of Valery’s bratty raps over electronica fuzz and heavier rock elements.

Noga Erez - “Pity”

Tel Aviv's Noga Erez made quite a shuffle with her last track "Dance While You Shoot", a criticism of Israel's fragile political situation. In short her previous track points out that you can't dance if there's guns blaring. Her latest track shifts to another realm and onto the topic self-image where she she sharply spits over her raps over punchy beats to the quirk of its light dance rhythms:

Totemo - “Prime”

A favorite from this little showcase from ours, Tel Aviv’s Rotem Or of Totemo exhibits more of a Scandinavian pop gaze than something you’d imagine from the Middle East. Cold, frigid melodies are complimented by the timid whisper of Totemo’s soft melancholy lifted by the blissful climax on the beauty of a track that is “Prime”
