Together with my dad, I cycled to Bad Berleburg today. Parts of the route were new for both of us. It was exhausting because of the length (about 80 km, often on rough ground), the elevation (627 altimetres in total) and the near constant headwind, but the beautiful landscape of the Rothaargebirge more than made up for it.

Into the forests

Cycled to Siegen yesterday and had some interesting encounters on route. Helped a couple on E-Bikes find the right way, and we proceeded to constantly overtake each other for about ten kilometres: I was faster on the flat or slightly ascending bits, they on the steeper uphill ones.

To reach Siegen from where I live, one has to cycle up the valley of the Dill for a stretch and then cross the watershed range of hills at some point. I chose the ascent to a summit called Tiefenrother Höhe. The climb is mostly moderate, but there’s a nasty bit near the end. It’s very steep, rising in ramps of between 15 and 20 %. The ground is loose gravel. Yesterday, to my surprise, it was quite busy. Apart from my two E-Bike companions, there were three others. They were alreay halfway up when I started my ascent at the bottom. The E-Bike chaps sped on, I struggled uphill. I reached the summit together with the slowest of the three other cyclists, a lady on a trekking bike. Her two companions cheered us on, and even high-fived her and me to celebrate our ascent by sheer muscle- (and will-)power.

The final ten kilometres into Siegen are rather flat. There was a bit of headwind, though. At one point a chap on a mountain-bike (not an electrical one) overtook me. He looked rather fit and proceeded to ride at a good speed. I stayed behind him, keeping my distance enough to not ride in his slipstream as this is often frowned upon. When during a spell of strong wind he slowed down and seemed to struggle a bit, I overtook him and jokingly offered him to ride behind me for a bit to recover. Oh dear, here was me trying to be nice, but I hadn’t taken into account his fragile ego. He was really shocked to see me again, had obviously thought he’d left that chubby female mountain-biker far behind a few kilometres back, and here I was again, overtaking(!) him and even riding fast enough so that he couldn’t easily overtake me again. When we had to stop at a traffic lights, he even said something like “Oh dear, am I really this slow?”

No, my friend, we were cycling at over 30 kmh, on mountain-bikes, with a head-wind. So that was all right. Just don’t make it a habit to underestimate your fellow cyclists, particularly if they’re women.
