Over twenty-five years ago, @the.real.xeno took a bunch of us wiley, young, art, undergrads on a bus trip to Houston. It was my first time to visit the @menilcollection, but more importantly the @rothko_chapel. I remember walking in to this space and being amazed by the monumental color field paintings which, at first glance, appeared to be solid black. After quietly sitting in the space which was intended to be reminiscent of sitting in the shade under a large tree, you start to realize that the paintings are actually subtle hues of deep purples, reds and blues. It was my first experience of painting as an environment and slow perception shifts. I decided, since I am stranded in Houston because of #tropicalstormimelda, and my friend @lizayellott is letting me use her husbands car, I would take a trip back to one of my favorite places in world. Definitely disappointed that the site is closed, but I am happy that it is being restored. Even so long ago I still remember the water damage to the paintings that was beginning to happen due to a leaky roof. Hopefully it won’t be another twenty-five years before visiting this space again. #rothko #rothkochapel #restoration #colorfieldpainting #reflection #solitude #silence #atmosphere #octagon #sitespecific #brokenobelisk #barnettnewman #markrothko #artofthesublime #sublime (at Rothko Chapel) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2pS2NBAin8/?igshid=w22yftq6v8xx
