He has no idea what he’s looking at right now, what she’s just taken out of the oven. But it’s fine, right? It looks fine, and everything will be fine. If he wills it to be, so it will be.

           split  lip  the  only  remnant,  he’s  changed  into  dirty  sneakers,  holey  jeans,  a  lord  of  the  rings  t-shirt.  glasses  are  slightly  askew  over  the  swelling  in  his  cheek;  past  that,  it’s  easy  to  smile  a  little  into,  “can  i  get  taho?  five  of  ‘em?”

          He’s being a little ridiculous, && on some level, he knows that. He’d been ecstatic to share his love of more niche novels with someone, && had enthusiastically offered to let Divina borrow something from his shelf. When it comes time to hand off said book, however, he found the muscles in his fingers freezing over the cover, hands refusing to actually let go of the novel. Irrational fear of handing over a perfectly cared for, pristine novel && receiving a tattered && bruised copy back takes hold, though rationally, he knows it’s unfounded. Even on the off chance that his friend managed to damage the book, it’s not one of the older classics he’s taken ages to find; it’s still in print, he would have no hard time finding another copy.

          Her voice pulls him from his reverie, the young genius shaking his head to force his thoughts to focus on reality once more. He gives an easy smile, takes a deep breath, && finally hands the book off to her. ❛❛ No, no, please, I told you you could borrow it, and I intend to keep my word. Sorry about that, I just don’t…really loan out my books very often. My other friends aren’t too interested in most of what I read. ❜❜

                 it  doesn't  sound  insecure  or  anything,  really,  which  is  what  he  generally  would  attribute  to  something  like  that.  maybe  their  current  location  helps,  looking  at  each  other  across  counters  that  he's  just  wiped,  a  broom  in  his  hand,  standing  in  sweatpants  and  a  clearly  worn  hoodie.  it's  enough  for  him  to  loft  a  brow,  though,  eyes  to  become  a  little  firmer,  a  little  more  present.  "nothing  bad."  bad  as  in:  disposable,  circumstantial,  just  something  for  entertainment.  but  he  doesn't  want  to  give  her  more  than  she  may  be  asking  for,  oversharing  just  for  the  fuck  of  it.  "are  you,  like.  breaking  up  with  me,  or  what?"

“It’d be a — it’d be a real classy place. You know how smoke shops are starting to get all spiffy and stuffy? I’d want a section like that, for the real serious fan — fan — fan of masks, or what have you. I’d want a decent fancy section for them. That’s just where I’m at right now.”

He hasn’t shut up about his ex-girlfriend, who loved this club, for most of the evening. He’s oblivious to Divina’s patience wearing thin — if she even had patience for this to begin with. 

And then he sees her — sequined dress, high heels, I-just-got-fucked hair. She was way out of his league — and that was the least of their problems, now that he’s had time to reflect on it. On the him of it all. On the lives with his mom and dad still of it all. Of the dreams that never come true of it all. 

But, yes, he sees her. And she sees him, and she sees Divina. Young and beautiful and, quite frankly, too cool for any of this. She’s decided she must introduce herself. 

“Look, Divina,” Weston says with the look of a man who knows he is about to jump from a very tall building, who knows he may not make it to the ground alive. “I need you to — I need you to trust me. Okay?” 

And he leans forward, too sudden, and kisses her passionately. 

Maybe, despite her, he has already wanted to do this for a long time.
