March 18th, 1923 – Johannes Itten’s last day at the Bauhaus? This could very well be the story behind this photo. Itten often used thistles as a prop for his preliminary course. The person holding thistles in the 3rd row on the right might just be him. It is somewhat disorienting to see him without his usual bald head, but a photo of him in Herrliberg, Switzerland from the same year also shows him with hair.

Friedl Dicker (likely) – 2nd from left

These identifications were made using detailed research and have been verified by a number of historians. Many details behind this photo remain unclear.

Rowac tool cabinets were not only used in factory workshops but also in many trade schools. Built in 1924, the Industrieschule Chemnitz was once the largest of its kind in all of Europe.
