I am really enjoying the titles coming out of Image right now, so interesting for adult readers with a wide range of stories, worlds and characters. If you've read any of my other reviews you'll be getting a bit of a pattern, I'm really into occult Detectives, dark magic and symbolism, this is what attracted me to Black Magick straight away. Its all right there on the cover that drew me into this one. The story opens on an occult ceremony involving our protagonist a occult practitioner and Police Detective, Rowan Black who is called away to deal with a hostage crisis, where the hostage taker is asking for her specifically. The aftermarth from this incident leads us down the black magick path with spells, protective wards and a war between witches and witch-hunters. The writer Greg Rucka does a good job quickly enveloping you in the world of black magick, the lore he creates around the spells and rituals is imaginative, his writing is well paced and keeps your attention throughout, he builds suspense nicely and all allowed for a great read. The art of Nicola Scott, is really the standout here. The general use of blacks and greys, but using vibrant colours sparingly only to highlight the most dramatic panels is striking and adds to the drama of the writing, complementing it perfectly. It reminds me of Speilbergs use of colour in Schindlers List. Overall this is another great read from Image Comics. #comics #comicbooks #comicreview #graphicnovel #comicjunkie #bookstagram #bibliophile #imagecomics #blackmagick #rowanblack #wiccan #witch #occult #detective #police #witchcraft #spells #wards #demon #witchunters #comicart #nerd #geek #fanboy #fangirl #bookreview
