Lost wax method of casting – workshop with Rowen Smith.
1. Model object in clay.
a. Keep clay wet.
b. Use hand-made tools for specific marks.
2. Build a wall in parts divided for plaster jacket.
a. Support jacket on one side.
3. “throw” plaster on to one side of object.
a. Fill water in container.
b. Sprinkle plaster powder in water until “islands” form on surface.
c. Mix lightly with hand until begins to thicken slightly.
4. Drape wet newspaper on other side of wall to protect other side of object.
5. Flick plaster onto side of object to cover evenly (watery texture).
a. Drop thickening plaster onto side of object (milkshake).
b. Push up against base of object, and build up sides (ice-cream).
c. Smooth plaster out with hand.
d. Allow to set and harden (a few minutes).
6. Remove wet newspaper and peel back wall.
7. Carve away jagged sides of mould.
8. Carve in keys into the sides of mould (facing flat inner surfaces).
9. Paint on releasing agent (dishwashing liquid).
10. Throw plaster into other side of mould.
11. Let set
12. Carve to reveal seam.
13. Remove clay from mould.
14. Zip-tie mould together and soak for 30min and press clay around seam.
15. Stand upright.
16. Melt wax and pour into mould.
