On this day in 1890, The Sleeping Beauty was first performed in St. Petersburg. Tchaikovsky was approached by the Director of the Imperial Theatres about composing the music for a ballet adaptation of Charles Perrault's La Belle au bois dormant. He did not hesitate to accept the commission and ballet master Marius Petipa composed the choreography. By 1903, The Sleeping Beauty was the second most popular ballet in the repertory of the Imperial Ballet, having been performed 200 times in just 10 years. It was first performed by The Royal Ballet in 1946 and it was also the first ballet performed at the Royal Opera House after World War II. Pictured here is Rowena Jackson as Florine in the 1950s - the beautiful costume was designed by Oliver Messel.
