summary |
It's been years since the war, but wartime fears of traitors, spies, and saboteurs still run rampant. With no one else for the general society to blame, mages are made into scapegoats - magecraft, as everyone well knows, is a crutch that weakens the mind and makes the users easily corruptible to the enemy side. Not to mention they also have an innate connection to the Immortal Neftyr.
Eight years ago, Maya discovered her magic, after she made the plants in her garden sprout in the dead of winter. Rather than celebrate the new source of food and income, Maya's parents abandoned her, believing their child might one day betray them and their nation. Now seventeen, Maya finds refuge at Wingstone, a shack of a building where she and other mages can be free of the stifling Taelium that blocks their abilities, and practice magecraft freely. It doesn't hurt that Leo, the cutest girl in the whole world probably, does the same.
But the freedom Maya experiences is threatened when it's announced that the nation's largest festival - the Harvest, celebrating the Immortal Alamor, will be taking place in her village in a few short months. The preparations following bring a rise in crack downs on mages halls like her beloved Wingstone, all under the guise of quelling "disorder'. As the raids begin and mages start getting arrested for doing nothing beyond existing, how far will Maya go to protect the life she's built for herself?
characters |
maya: 17, protagonist, believes in a better future, distrusts the Guard on principal, plant-aligned mage
leo: 16, innocent smol bean who could actually rearrange your face if you got on her bad side, enjoys finding happiness in little things, water-aligned mage
andromeda: 30-something, maya's employer, focused on growing her business, disgusted by mages, not a mage
wingstone owner: 55, currently unnamed, part of Kaltah (organized crime group, focus on money), at wingstone often but almost no interaction with maya, fire-aligned mage
guard commander: 30-something, leads several raids, usually one who gives tip-off in exchange for money, doesn't really care about mages - just wants the money, not a mage
other stuff | basically a fantasy version of the stonewall riots, found family, pining (probably - i haven't definitively figured out the nature of the romantic subplot yet), small coastal city - currently medieval in inspiration though that may change
