What you call collusion I see as a natural reaction to the sexist harassment of women that was going on. Your idea of unethical journalism is nothing but journalism that is rightfully critical of you

My idea of unethical journalism is making secret industry-wide email lists where they discuss the best way to discredit any accusations leveled against them, instead of addressing the accusations themselves. Secret industry-wide email lists where they say shit like “who hasn’t slept with a game developer tho lmao” because, y’know, they have the highest of respect for the developer under fire and are only concerned with protecting her dignity instead of covering their own asses.

You really can’t make this into an anti-harassment thing, especially considering how many of these journalists went on to harass anyone who expressed even the most minor disapproval of their methods on Twitter. “Bring back bullying” is not something you say when your only desire is to stop unfair harassment. Being “anti-gamergate” doesn’t necessarily make you any more anti-harassment than being pro-gamergate does, and there are plenty of examples of innocent people on the #gamergate and #notyourshield tags being harassed to prove it. Being against harassment is the only thing that makes you anti-harassment, and the journalists in question clearly are not that.

Criticism is fine, in fact I encourage it! Maybe if these journalists had been more critical with regards to each other’s failings—not to mention their own—then people wouldn’t have so much of a problem. Throwing a hissy fit and sticking your fingers in your ears every time someone questions you isn’t being critical; it’s being ridiculously childish and, yes, unethical.

Like, this debate that we’re having here? This is fair! We’re both making our statements and not just hurling stupid insults at each other. We’re making it clear what our issues are with each other’s respective viewpoints and we’re addressing these issues. You are being critical of me. I am replying with my reasoning. This is how grown adults are supposed to conduct themselves in arguments. This is not how the people at Gawker and the like are conducting themselves, and that’s what I feel we need to do something about.

Who goes after indie developers that have zero influence in the gaming journalism world over who they sleep with? That guy didn't even write anything about depression quest

imo regardless of which “side” they’re on, anyone who still tries to make this about Zoe Quinn is missing the point spectacularly

people responded with (rightful, if perhaps a bit premature given that they didn’t have the facts yet) anger upon finding out that a game developer had been sleeping with game journalists at the exact time that her game was being circulated and reviewed, particularly on websites that the journalists in question were directly affiliated with. moreover, the game in question really wasn’t very good from an objective viewpoint—it was a pretty flawed representation of the subject matter, for one thing, and it literally restricted player choice and gameplay in a manner that was meant to be a metaphor for depression, but again, fell flat and just ended up being frustrating—but received oddly glowing reviews from the websites in question. both factors led to a lot of suspicion about possible collusion and/or bias.

in my opinion, the real issue didn’t come to light until the journalists in question responded to that suspicion by… ignoring legitimate concerns and complaints, banning anyone with even the most polite criticism or suspicion of their methods from making comments on their websites, colluding in secret to attempt to discredit their detractors by insulting the very hobby their jobs depended on, and just generally responding to accusations of journalistic corruption with more journalistic corruption

i wouldnt care if it were just about Zoe Quinn, but the fact that any attempts to uncover the truth of the issue (i.e. whether or not personal relationships with the developer played a part in reviews) were silenced so quickly and enthusiastically by the journalists under scrutiny reveals quite a lot about the game journalism industry and its attitude towards the crazy notion that journalists should be more transparent with regards to any personal relationships with other figures in the industry. i don’t care if you’re sleeping with them or w/e, just let us know that you happen to know them on a personal level so we can be aware of any biases that may or may not exist. this is like entry-level being-a-reliable-source shit and games are never going to be taken seriously, no matter how beautiful and artistic they may be, if the industry in charge of reporting on them doesn’t grow up and start acting like legitimate journalists

this was longer than i intended but the tl;dr is: you can be anti-people-using-gamergate-as-an-excuse-to-harass-other-people. i am that. most people that aren’t the ones using gamergate as an excuse to harass other people are that. but gamergate sprung up as a reaction to the events above, so anyone proclaiming themselves anti-gamergate is at the very least indirectly defending the actions of those journalists. i don’t understand why anyone would do that

Why I like them

I like her spunky personality for the most part, particularly the beginning of KH.  A lot of potential as a character.

The incredible lack of character development since her introduction as a character has always made me pretty apathetic towards her

Other than complaining about how Kingdom Hearts has screwed her over as being the MacGuffin "Princess of the Heart" with no agency of her own before heavily making her Designated Love Interest I can't really think of any

you should really play the game! you'll miss a lot if you only watch cutscenes

I really would, but I'm just so so so so bad at shooters and stealth that, knowing me, I'd just die over and over and eventually get frustrated and quit. The 'movie' I'm watching includes dialogue and story stuff from gameplay along with cutscenes, so hopefully I won't miss too much

thanks so much! I guess I'll probably play p4 then since I can get it on PSN, I don't really have a way to play ps2 games right now :/ good to know they're separate stories like FF games though, that helps a lot. its too bad i dont have a vita just to play the best versions of both games...

Yeah, it's such a bummer the Vita is 1. so expensive and 2. has no games because it's a really powerful, slick piece of hardware that has a lot of potential/can be really convenient. I will warn you that P4's opening is incredibly story-heavy and it takes quite a while to get going, but it's so incredibly worth it, so hang in there. Good luck!
