No thoughts. Just a great illustration with a pretty staid print ad.

I’m reading William Paul’s When Movies Were Theater: Architecture, Exhibition, and the Evolution of American Film (Columbia University Press, 2016), so I went searching for images of S.L. “Roxie” Rothapfel and the Strand Theatre he managed in New York City, which set the early standard for picture palace design and programming from its opening in 1914. This is a beautiful image of the Strand’s double stage, with the orchestra in its place on the fore-stage and the screen situated behind on the second stage.
If this piques your interest, head over to @theatrehistoricalsociety-blog, which I just discovered. Great stuff over there.
