Emmett Louis Till was a 14-year-old African American boy who was abducted, tortured, and lynched in Mississippi in 1955, after being accused of offending a white woman in her family's grocery store.
It was sixty-six years ago today that a 14-year-old boy, Emmett Till, was brutally murdered for the crime of being Black in a town called Money, Mississippi. You all know the story, but allow me to just quickly refresh your memories …
Emmett was from ‘up north’ in Chicago, but his mother had sent him to Mississippi to spend the final two weeks of summer with his beloved grandfather before…
Was just reading up on the Emmet Till killing in Mississippi in 1955. He was a 14 year-old black kid who was accused of whistling at a white woman, and subsequently murdered for it (the white woman later said, in 2007, that she made the whole thing up).
In 1956, one of the killers (after being acquitted) said the following to Look magazine (under a cut because I’m posting it word-for-word, and it includes the N-word):
“Well, what else could we do? He was hopeless. I’m no bully; I never hurt a nigger in my life. I like niggers—in their place—I know how to work ‘em. But I just decided it was time a few people got put on notice. As long as I live and can do anything about it, niggers are gonna stay in their place. Niggers ain’t gonna vote where I live. If they did, they’d control the government. They ain’t gonna go to school with my kids. And when a nigger gets close to mentioning sex with a white woman, he’s tired o’ livin’. I’m likely to kill him. Me and my folks fought for this country, and we’ve got some rights. I stood there in that shed and listened to that nigger throw that poison at me, and I just made up my mind. ‘Chicago boy,’ I said, ‘I’m tired of ‘em sending your kind down here to stir up trouble. Goddam you, I’m going to make an example of you—just so everybody can know how me and my folks stand.’”
No further charges were filed after this confession.
(And in 2007, the woman who originally levied the charge admitted that she was lying at the time.)
Which makes Trump’s recent visit to the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum even more confusing than it already was. Mississippi has made huge strides. I mean, sure, there are still plenty of racists there. It’s the South. But after 10 failed attempts to bring the building of the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum to a vote, the 11th finally made it to a vote. Not EVERYBODY from the South is a racist, and they’re starting to get outnumbered when public funds are used to build a museum acknowledging the state’s hateful past.
But compare the words of one of the murderers to Donald Trump’s own words.
Murderer on black people: “I’m tired of ‘em sending your kind down here to stir up trouble.”
Trump: “They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists.”
This is the America that Trump thinks of when he wants to “Make America Great Again.”
And it is NOT an America I want to go back to.
America has NEVER been great (we’ve had our moments; we’ve also always had our problems), but we have the potential. To assume that we have to go back in time to some racist, hateful, violent time to be “great” simply shows that we have a racist ass in the White House who wants to turn back every bit of progress we’ve made.
I don’t know whether to be glad or scared out of my wits that he’s currently more interested in the size of his “nuclear button” (which doesn’t exist -- there’s a process to launching nukes in the U.S. and Trump can’t do it alone -- not sure about North Korea, but it would probably be wise to stop this nuclear dick-size contest NOW before it’s too late -- two massively egotistical leaders in a schoolyard twitter scuffle when both have the ability to launch nukes? What could POSSIBLY go wrong?).
I mean...in a month or so, all complaints may be moot because we could be dead after a nuclear war. I’m not saying it’s gonna happen. I’m hopeful that it won’t. But with two egomaniacs with weapons going at it, and comparing the size of their “buttons”...it’s possible.
This is the world in which we now live. It’s not a good world. The people in it, for the most part, are good. But the leaders? A bunch of thin-skinned bullies. And we can only blame the voters (at least on the American end). And the leaders might just end the rest of us in an ego contest.
You have heard the story about Carolyn Bryant claiming that Emmett Till “wolf whistled at her” and supposedly grabbed her arm. This incident
I find it extremely interesting that Carolyn Bryant, Roy Bryant and JW Milam all died of cancer. Sometimes I think about things too much, but this seems like more than just a mere coincidence to me.
"The men who lynched and stole the life of Emmett Till were acquitted today despite the overwhelming evidence of the defendants’ guilt. Jurors acquitted Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam of all charges involving Emmett Till's murder. Their deliberations lasted ONLY 67 minutes. They later confessed to the murder and were paid $4,000. Let’s us also not forget that in 2017 Carolyn Bryant Donham admitted to lying that Emmett had grabbed and threatened her inside her husband's store.
In 2020, TODAY (65 years later from the Emmett Till case)! Brett Hankison only gets charged with wanton endangering, while Myles Cosgrove and Jonathan Mattingly, were not charged AT ALL! Here is the kicker, the three wanton endangerment charges for Hankison are not related to Breonna Taylor's death. They are charges for shots he fired that went into neighboring apartments. Hankison was booked and released in Shelby County in 32 minutes.
Please make it make sense? Know that once again history has repeated itself. My Blackness is once again disturbed and my heart is broken. The past is not past. It resurfaces showing the same evils that never went away because we continually allow harmful people to lead. Will you vote now? Will you raise your voice now? Or will let generations of Black people continue to suffer at the hands of White supremacy and systematic racism? It’s the same whether you see it in Black and White or Color (I specifically chose these colors for the photos)! These injustices continue!"
