Former Press Photographer Claims Anglican Church Ran NSW Abusive Home
Tommy Campion, a former press photographer, has testified before the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse about tormented and abusive life children had at Lismore-based North Coast Children's Home.
The 65-year-old survived the sex abuse and became the public face of those who suffered a life of horrible abuse berefting dignity and protection at the Anglican church-run NSW children home. However, in 2005, the Anglican Church refused to compensate for their sufferings claiming that it did not run the orphanage.
Mr Campion was sent to the orphanage in 1947 when his parents parted away. For the next 17 years, he witnessed how children went through "complete and utter hell" at the church-run home. In 2005, the former press photographer sent a “five-page letter to the Anglican Grafton Diocese” describing the abusive life at the orphanage. This led to many such survivors coming forward and disclosing the most brutal part of their lives during stay at the Children's Home.
The church turned its back on these victims saying that "We (the Anglican church) did not own the home. We did not run the home, there were a few ministers who'd come now and again and they had a small involvement in the home but basically the church had nothing to do with the home. Some of the matters complained of might have been standard practice in Australia some decades ago.”
At least 200 children were sexually abused at the orphanage between 1940 and 1980. Another witness told the Royal Commission that those who committed suicides at the orphanage were luckier than them because they did not have to live the abusive life that was worse than death. Identified as CK, he was sexually abused for nine years and tried to commit suicide a number of times. He was abused by a priest many times at a church belltower.
