Queen Elizabeth I is an icon. For feminists, for historians, and for us mere mortals, she is the most famous monarch to have ever ruled on earth. And even in the afterlife shes awesome.

She spends her afterlife in Windsor Castle, floating between the royal library to the inner room.

Two other monarchs - King George III and King Edward VII - both claimed they saw a woman in this area draped in a black dress which might have been the queen.

George III was even told by Liz that she was married to England.

But George VI wins the supernatural sightings contest, claiming he saw her for 8 nights leading up the start of WW2.

Spook Of The Day #095 • The ghost of Queen Victoria’s forbidden lover wanders the hallways of Balmoral

Queen Elizabeth II has seen a lot in her time. This includes the paranormal.

One of the spooky things she witnessed during her time happened in one of her favoured residences: Balmoral.

It is said that during Queen Victoria’s reign, she fell in love here. But the thing is, she fell in love with her servant, John Brown.

To this day he still wanders the corridors donning a kilt and an air of desperation for the queen he once loved...

And the one currently reigning often reports his presence.

Spook Of The Day #094 • Henry VIII’s ghost is seen walking the gardens at Windsor Castle - along with 25 other royal ghosts

Windsor Castle has seen many major moments of royal history - most recently it hosted the wedding of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry which as we all know ended so well for the royal family - but it’s this royal history that has a habit of repeating itself. In fact, this castle houses 25 of these ghosts.

There’s George III who was housed here during a period of insanity from which you can still see him peer through the window below the library, and there’s that huntsman that brings misfortune to those that see him...

But the most famous ghost - aside from Elizabeth I - is Henry VIII.

Legend has it you can hear him in the cloisters (and enclosed garden), his ulcerated leg thumping behind him.

Many people would jump at the chance to see royalty.  Unfortunately, the majority of us will never have the opportunity… to see a living member of a royal family that is. Luckily, if the stories can be believed, some of history’s most famous deceased royal persons can still be seen roaming the castles and courtyards they once called home. 

4. Catherine Howard:  Queen Catherine Howard was the fifth wife of Henry VIII. However, Catherine was much younger than the King, and she fell in love with her young cousin, Thomas Culpepper. Word of this affair, and many others that Catherine had had both during and prior to her marriage to Henry, eventually reached the King.  Enraged, Henry sentenced Catherine to death on the grounds of treason for committing adultery while married to the king. When Catherine was arrested at Hampton Court, she broke away from the guards and ran down the gallery into a chapel where Henry was praying.  She screamed and pleaded for her life, but Henry simply ignored her.  The guards seized her again and dragged her screaming and kicking away.  Catherine was quickly taken down a barge to the Tower of London, where she was beheaded.  After her death, her spirit returned to Hampton Court where it can sometimes be seen running frantically along the same path, pursued by phantom soldiers.  Her shrieks and screams are said to be bone chilling.  This gallery, known as the Haunted Gallery, was closed up as a result of Catherine’s unrequited ghost for many years.  However, in the 1900’s the Office of Works had the Haunted Gallery reopened and renovated in 1918.  It is still known as the Haunted Gallery.  Today, visitors on tours will often feel an eerie presence in the gallery. Those who are lucky can sometimes still catch a glimpse of the “Screaming Lady.”

5. Queen Elizabeth I: Elizabeth the I was the daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. In 1558, Elizabeth succeeded her half-sister to the throne. During her rule she spared England from a bloody religious war and stood-up against the tyrannical Spain.  Although she was lauded for these accomplishments, now she is also known for haunting Windsor Castle.  Those who visit will sometimes here the clicking of heels in the library, or spot a woman in a dark shawl walking around.  It is reported that King George III once claimed to have had a conversation with a phantom woman in black.  This phantom had called herself Elizabeth and told George that she was “married to England.” A century later, Edward VII also confided that he encountered a woman in black who greatly resembled Elizabeth.  Elizabeth is said to visit most frequently during times of war. George VI, the present queen’s father, saw the spirit of Elizabeth eight nights in a row prior to the beginning of WWII.

2. Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury:

After Cardinal Pole, the countesses son, offended King Henry VIII, Henry decided to eliminate the entire family.  In 1541, Lady Margaret was taken to the Tower of London to be executed. However, unlike Henry’s other victims, Margaret did not go to her death willingly. Instead she was dragged kicking and screaming to the scaffolding.  She refused to make the usual declaration of loyalty to the Kind and refused to do anything to consent to her death (as was custom at that time). When she was told to lay her head on the block she said “No, my head never committed treason. If you want it, you must take it as you can.” After the executioner tried to grab her, Margaret ran around the block while moving her head from side to side.  While she did this the executioner struck at her with his axe.  Finally, she was mortally wounded and was forcibly held down.  After crying our “Blessed are those who suffer persecution for righteousness’s sake,” she finally met her demise as the executioner cut off her head. Witnesses have reported seeing this grisly scene repeated several times on the anniversary of her death.

1.       Anne Boleyn: Anne was the second wife of the infamous Henry the VIII.  After being arrested for high treason (based on false charges due to the fact that she could not produce a male heir), she was taken to the Tower of London, found guilty, and beheaded. However, the unfairness and horror surrounding her death has not allowed Anne to rest easy.

 People claim that her spirit haunts many different locations throughout England.  At Blickling Hall in Norfolk, it is said that on the anniversary of her death Anne can be seen driving up the road in a coach. She holds her severed head in her hands and is driven by headless horses.  Her headless spirit has also been seen driving around Kent, where she is sometimes spotted on the roads near Hever Castle in a funeral coach driven by six headless horses.

  At a castle near Edenbridge, where Anne used to live, there is a great oak tree that still stands today.  Around Christmas time each year Anne’s restless ghost can be seen standing under the tree. 

Anne can also be spotted standing at the window in Dean’s Cloister at Windsor Castle. She has also been spotted running down a corridor screaming and clutching her head.

Although Anne haunts many locations, the most famous and frequent place she can be seen at is the Tower of London.  Within the Tower is the Church of St Peter and Vinuclar.  It is here where Anne was buried.  Several guards have reported seeing a strange light shining inside the church at night.  When one officer of the guard went to investigate he saw a procession of people dressed in Elizabethan clothing.  At the head of the procession was a spectacular woman who looked just like a portrait of Anne Boleyn that the officer had seen.  The ghostly procession passed down the aisle before suddenly vanishing.  In 1817 a soldier had a fatal heart attack after encountering her on the stairway, and in 1864 a soldier was court-martialed after being found asleep on duty. The officer claimed that he had fallen into a swoon after seeing Anne Boleyn.  Although the court had at first laughed at his claims, he was eventually acquitted of all charges after several witnesses came forward with claims of a headless woman in white near the Lieutenants Lodgings that night.  One officer said that while he was in his room he heard the officer say “Who goes there?” When he looked out the window he saw the sentry thrust his bayonet through a ghostly figure who proceeded to walk through both the bayonet and the soldier. In 1933 newspapers stated that a ghostly figure of a woman walked straight into the bayonet of a guard. The incident scared the guard so much that he fled from his post into the guardroom shouting for help.  In 1960 , Canon W.S Pakenham-Walsh, vicar of Sulgrave Northamptonshire, reported having conversations with Anne.
