A cardboard milk bottle top produced especially for the first visit of the young Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh to New Zealand. The NZ History website suggests that perhaps three in every four New Zealanders saw the royal couple on this visit. At this time milk was delivered in glass bottles and the cardboard top was pressed into a groove on the inside rim of the neck top. This method was later replaced with the used of foil caps which covered the glass bottle rim. Glass bottles were replaced by plastic in about 1989, but may yet make a comeback.

The Queen’s Plate is the oldest horse race in Canada, and the oldest continuously run in North America, since 1860 when it was founded, during Queen Victoria’s reign. Interesting to note, it became the King’s Plate whilst Edward VII (1901-1910), George V (1910-1936), Edward VIII (1936) and George VI (1936-1952) were monarchs of Canada, but their combined reigns (51 years) do not come near to the number of years (108) a Queen was the monarch since the inception of the race (which did not begin with Victoria’s reign either!)
Usually run in late June or early July, the Queen’s Plate has been postponed to September this year, due to the ongoing pandemic.
