Any event held at Nadodi is always one to remember, and last week’s Royal Salute dinner was no different. The event saw the launch of the Royal Salute 30 Year Old Key To The Kingdom expression, and also introduced us to the cognac cask-finished Royal Salute 24 Year Old, as well as the Royal Salute 51 Year Old. The dinner was delicious as always, and the pairing of the Royal Salute 21YO Signature and Malts blends with the food was exceptionally done. The highlight, of course, was the tasting of the 30YO, and it didn’t disappoint. It is inspired by the brand’s unique connection with the British Monarchy - the Key To The Kingdom takes its name from the Ceremony of the Keys held annually in Edinburgh. The nose is full of candy sweetness and honey, with a hint of light smoke. The palate is also honey sweet at first, then intense spice mid-palate with subtle nuttiness and sweet again. The finish is a bit short at first but the spice does linger. The 24YO is a different dram altogether. Sweet on the nose and entry, with the cognac cask finish quite apparent, then transitions to a slightly maltier mid-palate with a light fruity finish. All in all, two unique expressions of the Royal Salute, enhanced wonderfully by a great dinner pairing.
