Merry Christmas, Emma!

I hope you’re having the best holidays. No one deserves a break more than you do. After absolutely everything we’ve gone through this year.... well, it’s been crazy, hasn’t it? I can’t thank you enough for going through everything with me. I’ve always liked you, but getting to know you this year, even through all the mayhem, has been a serious treat. I need a friend like you in my life, and I hope that you still enjoy my company after it all. It’s sort of like being the two survivors at the end of a slasher movie - it was a horrible journey but it makes you closer than you could’ve ever imagined. I never imagined I’d love you some day, but I do, Emma. Forgive me for getting mushy, but I love you a lot and I’m just so grateful we ended up in the same story.

Along that note, please enjoy the Game Night mug I had made for all of us. Another gift I’ve given the lot of us is a castle ID card, for access whenever you’d like - yours has you listed as a Garden Consultant, which means our royal gardens are open to you at any hour of the day. No one can love them more than you. 

Of course, let’s not neglect your personal garden. I found some lovely seeds for a plant called the bird of paradise and I really hope you’ll take them and use them to make your new home flourish even more. They’re really quite lovely, after all, and they’re supposedly hard to grow. I figured you could use a challenge so that you don’t forget what it felt like to be my fiance.

Because of which, of course, I owe you more than anyone. I could never pay you back for that kindness, but allow me to try - below are two credit cards linked to my account, two passports, and two travel vouchers. This summer, take them and go wherever you want, travel, see the world and the flora and fauna that inhabit it. Take notes if you want, or don’t! I’m not in the habit of passing out free all-expense paid vacations to people, but I trust you to make the most of it and not just squander it in some hotel room somewhere. Take whoever you like - Oliver or Becca or your new sister or myself, if I’m lucky - and just go. I almost handcuffed you to me metaphorically and I’m never making that mistake again. See things! Have fun! And I hope that if you see a corpse flower in your travels, that you think of me.

I know it’s been a weird year and I don’t know if the stuff that happened to you made you angrier or sadder than you let on, so I decided to give you a gift to take out that frustration you might get on. You know, for when you’re done gardening or can’t go outside for some reason.

Happy holidays from your neighborhood Persephone!

Emma, you hit me like a car this year.

That sounds like a negative, but I wasn’t able to come up with any better visuals, no matter how long I sat here trying to pen this letter (so far it’s been twenty minutes of staring at the page and thinking about cars). Simply put, I didn’t see anything about you coming. Not your involvement in my life, or your actions, behaviors, your feelings. You’re a constant surprise and while at first it made my life more difficult, or so I believed, I’ve quite grown to like it. Which is quite fortuitous for us, seeing as you’re my new live-in friend.

The first few presents are to sort of really welcome you to our home. I know, by now, you probably feel completely welcomed, but I have a lot of welcoming to do to make up for my previous behavior. I know you can grow beautiful plants whenever you like, but when’s the last time someone grew flowers for you? I can’t pretend I’m anywhere your level of planting, but I’m fairly good at knitting. I was making you a knit rose and I may have gone a teensy tiny overboard with this entire bouquet. It’s at least beautiful, and I hope you have a place for it in your room. You don’t even have to remember these!

I wanted to give you a bear ring or an arrow ring, as is traditional in Dunbroch, but I knew better than to think that rings would stay on your finger long whilst planting - besides, you might want a break before you put another ring on, so the only jewelry I could think of that was durable and maybe more your style than anything I own is this leather strap that I had monogrammed with your name as my people would have spelled it, Eama. I know it isn’t technically your culture but I hope it helps you feel at one with us.

I did bug you about pan collars and while I understand that it’s a little formal for you, I thought this removable pan collar would be more your speed. It literally is very little effort and can be added under any shirt for instant posh. I hope you never need to use it, but it’s there in case of fashion emergencies.

I didn’t buy you full pan-collared shirts or delicate jewelry because I would hate to change who you are, Emma. There’s something so genuine about you that’s hard to find and no amount of etiquette lessons would be able to stamp that out of you, no matter how much you do need to know as you are a princess. I got you an etiquette book, but I made a few edits within. I edited the entire ‘how to accept compliments’ section, and ‘appropriate attire for ladies’, and the rest just has notes throughout. You’ll see as you flip through; as much as I love etiquette, I really appreciate you and the special Emma-isms you bring to my life. I wish someone would write the book on you, but until then, at least there’s this one edited as closely as I can. Never feel like you aren’t as much of something as you “should be”, because you are yourself, and you are enough, and you are wonderful.

I’m very much looking forward to living with you and adding more knowledge of you to the book. The metaphoric one, of course, in my brain.

Merry Christmas, COUSIN!

I love you way too much, you know that? You’ve been my best friend my whole damn life and I just can’t believe you don’t live with us anymore. Cousin, neighbors, besties - we had it all. We can still have it all, though! I’m glad I know now that we’re two strong pillars, not falling onto each other for support, but standing upright besides each other for eternity. Or something prettier sounding than that, I dunno.

Anyway, since you were gonna be queen but didn’t get to, I made a super cute crown beanie for me. I did it, tooootally me and not my mom. I did however find you some cute gloves to match. I know it’s not AS cold in Dunbroch but you still gotta keep those hands warm.
