❝ i - i’m – i’m j - just trying to – to save myself th - the pain of you e - eventually leaving on your o - own by – b - by pushing you away m - myself. ❞ she whispers, curling up on her side on the bed. melody wants to believe that he won’t leave, but everyone else has, so what would stop him from leaving too? she’s not sure she could try if he wanted to. it happens so much she’s numb to it. she’s learned to expect it. but if she drives them away first, it’s not as painful for her ( or at least, in her opinion it isn’t, but god it hurts so much ).

❝ y - you – you’ll l - leave because i’m n - not pretty or smart o - or – or HAPPY all the t - t - time. i - i’m not – n - not good at anything, s - so i – i - i don’t even kn - know what you see in me, a - aisel. ❞ she shakes her head, tightly hugging her pillow. why would he want to be with such a USELESS person like her? he’d be better off with someone that’s so much better than her. someone like his previous wife, lily. melody often wonders if he thinks she’s trying to replace her.

melody sits up, suddenly wrapping her arms around him and burying her face in his shoulder. ❝ i - i’m – i’m s - sorry. i d - don’t mean to d - d - doubt you so m - much, aisel. i’m so s - sorry. ❞ she begins to sob, digits tightly clutching the back of his shirt. what did she do to deserve him? how could she think she could EVER push him away? while everyone else seemed intent on staying, they still left, but aisel seems different. he’s INSISTED on staying with her and actually seems to want to stay, as if he’s not just tolerating her. why are people like him so rare?❝ i - i – i don’t d - deserve you, a - aisel. y - you – you deserve someone s - so m - much better. ❞

The echo of the gunshot rings through him like a physical presence all its own, shaking through his bones and constricting his chest so tight that it’s a miracle he manages to get out a shout of Aisel’s name off his panicked tongue. It falls into the air cracked with emotions and the crushed weight of the air being forced completely out of him. He can’t think beyond what he’s seeing, watching his friend fall and how his own body is moving faster than he can even process. If this is one of his nightmares, he prays he wakes up soon ---- but he doesn’t because it’s not and he can feel the heat and slickness of the blood against his hands when he gets to there, hands pressing over the wound.

Words fail him even with Aisel speaking, it takes too much of his brain to think and he’s running on instinct and adrenaline with vision blurring. Maybe it’s a blessing because then he can’t see the wound clearly and his skin is already heating up with a slight glow. The only thing that sticks is that he can’t let him die --- and would an ambulance be able to get to him in time? Chris doesn’t know, doesn’t want to risk it even as his hands start to glow in determination because he won’t let his friend die.

He won’t, he can’t. ( What if he fails? )

Swallowing, he presses firmly into the wound, trying not to think of the warmth he feels stain them as the blood that it is. It doesn’t really work, sickness twisting his stomach and eyes latching upwards onto Aisel’s face. His brows knit together and tears stain his face, but there’s a set to his jaw because he can do something. He can --- he has to at least try.

“I --- I’ve got you, just stay awake, okay?” And everything he has, every bit of energy he can muster is thrown in through his hands in something of complete instinct of knowing it needs to be done to pull the bullet out and knit the flesh back together. To save his life... failure isn’t really an option. “Stay with me.”

is it possible to love someone more than you already do? even years down the road of being together with someone, can you still love them a little bit ( or a lot ) more than you did moments ago? because melody’s sure she does once again. even while they haven’t been together for years, she’s sure she’s overflowing with love for aisel. and so when she hears his words, she smiles at him, practically GLOWING with happiness.

❝ i - i – i know, aisel. ❞ melody speaks tenderly, soft and delicate hands coming up to gently cup his face, thumbs caressing his cheeks. she exhales slowly and as she stares at him longer, her smile grows bigger, and she can’t help but giggle softly. just knowing he’s here, right now with her, makes her perhaps the HAPPIEST woman in the world.❝ a - and – and you know i’ll always l - love you, y - yes? even w - when you think you’re u - unlovable, i – i’ll love you anyway, n - no – no m - matter what. w - when you’re upset or – or w - want to be alone, i’ll s - s - still always be here and i’ll still A - ALWAYS love you, n - no matter what. nothing could – c - could e - ever stop me f - from loving you, aisel. ❞ through thick and thin, she will always love him.

she was curious, perhaps because it’s valentine’s day and all, so she wondered if he had a date or something. although wouldn’t he have told her? not that she would’ve gotten UPSET if he didn’t, though, it’s not like they had plans for today, of course. why would he, or anyone else, for that matter, even want to spend today with her? she’s spent valentine’s day alone for some years now and the last time she spent it with someone was the boyfriend she had not long before she moved away from her parents, but her dad made sure that relationship ended in disaster. and since then, she’s spent today alone, like most every other day she spends. no wonder why a lot of people hate this holiday, melody thinks to herself, exhaling a small sigh.

❝ y - you … you got them f - for -- for me? ❞ her eyes are WIDE and cheeks are steadily becoming tinged with the same color of the roses aisel is offering her.

but as he speaks again, melody’s not sure she can believe his words. ❝ you … you w - what? ❞ it feels sudden, him admitting his feelings for her. but she realizes that, she too has been thinking about him for quite some time now. is what she feels for him love as well? lately, whenever she’s around him, she gets that feeling of butterflies in her stomach and her heart flutters whenever he smiles or laughs. and even a tiny glance given in her direction do roses BLOOM across pale cheeks. are these things she experiences because she loves him?

it doesn’t take her long to realize that, yes, she loves aisel too. ❝ th - there -- there’s no WAY i couldn’t not be i - interested in you, a - aisel. b - because i ... ❞ melody pauses, which feels like a long time to her, and forces down the lump in her throat. ❝ i - i love you, too.
