I’m sure you’ve all felt my absence in your lives, and I apologize for that. It’s been a busy few days on planet Hubnerion. The great meteor showers of 2015 took out nearly all of our solar towers, while electrical storms on the furthest tips of the great Jerky Canyons took out most of our nutrient harvesters, or “nutters” for short. We had several schnauzer stampedes due to them being spooked by…

Wow! I’m featured quite a bit in Amoeba Hollywood’s official Record Store Day 2015 video! Ha. Check it out to see my wild coffee fueled enthusiasm!
#6 Record Store Day
There has been quite a gap between my last post and this one, last week was really busy at work and I just didn’t have the motivation to write once I got home. This week should make up for that, as there is lots to talk about in terms of Record Store Day specifically. Let’s get started.
Music:
Saturday was Record Store Day, and man was it a doozy. Easily the most successful Record Store Day that I have had since I started collecting vinyl, between my wife and I we spent about $200! We picked up a good mix of Record Store Day Releases as well as some that we had been meaning to pick up. Here is a quick rundown of the lot:
Against Me! - Osama Bin Laden as the Crucified Christ 7”
Courtney Barnett - Kim’s Caravan 12”
Bright Eyes - Letting Off the Happiness 12”
Built to Spill - Untethered Moon 12”
Kind of Like Spitting - Nothing Makes Sense Without It 12”
Kenny Loggins - Danger Zone 7” (happened upon this on while waiting in-line)
Modest Mouse - Building Nothing Out of Something 12”
Modest Mouse - Interstate 8 12”
Sleater-Kinney - No Cities to Love 12”
Vampire Weekend - Step 12”
Violent Femmes - Happy New Year 12”
Various Artists - The Non-Violent Femmes 12”
The only two things I wasn’t able to find were Brand New’s Deja Entendu re-release and the Front Bottoms/GDP spit, which was unfortunate but I feel like we made out pretty well. I also already have the non-Record Store Day edition of Deja Entendu on pre-order from Amazon, and I would actually prefer to have the original cover art, even though the Record Store Day release came with some fun extra goodies.
Some more good music comes out tomorrow, Passion Pit are releasing Kindred and Speedy Ortiz are releasing Foil Deer. I’m really excited about the new Speedy Ortiz album. I’m a little bit more weary of the new Passion Pit, I like the new single but I have never been a huge fan of Manners, but Gossamer was incredible, so hopefully I’ll end up enjoying this one as well.
My wife and I just bought tickets to go see Against Me! in Des Moines over the fourth of July weekend, they are one of those bands that I have had the opportunity to see so many times, but the stars have never aligned so this will be a good show!
Video Games:
Since I didn’t make any posts last week, I will do some backtracking. The last post I made was in mention to it being me and wife’s anniversary. Well she was super awesome and picked up a Toad amiibo for me! This is one that we had been trying to hunt down, and I was super excited to activate the amiibo mode in Captain Toad’s Treasure Tracker. It is a fun little diversion from the main game, and it is quite challenging at times.
That weekend Target also had a sale 10% off all video games so I went through the bargain priced games to pick up some stuff that I had my eye on, but couldn’t really justify the full price tag. I purchased the Wii U editions of The Amazing Spider-Man and Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham. I’ve been playing a lot more of The Amazing Spider-Man than Lego Batman, which I’ve only played once so far. I always get enticed by the Lego series and then when I start playing them, I remember how much difficulty I have with them. I am really bad at solving the puzzles and figuring out what to do, which makes me wonder how those games are really supposed to be marketed towards kids. They always get more fun though as you unlock more characters and can explore a bit more, so I’m looking forward to fighting through the beginning and enjoying it more later on.
The Amazing Spider-Man is a lot of fun. It basically combines the Batman Arkham series with the classic Spider-Man 2 gameplay. It is a pretty easy game and the combat is obviously not quite as fluid as the Batman games but it is still a lot of fun. Perhaps the most addicting part of this game is just swinging around the city collecting comic book pages. This is definitely my favorite part of the game. Going around and finding all of them reminds me of a simplified version of collecting ability orbs in the Xbox 360 series, Crackdown. They are no where near as difficult to get, but I think I counted and there are about 700 so there’s lots to find, which is always fun.
Outside of that, I played a little bit of Arkham City this last week. This weekend I did a bit more gaming than I had done all week. On Saturday, I picked up the Super Mario Bros. edition of the Peach amiibo, completing my collection of the Super Mario Bros. wave one amiibos! I also downloaded Shovel Knight, which I had been wanting to play for a long time. I’ve really enjoyed what I’ve played so far. The retro vibe is perfectly intact and the soundtrack is a whole lot of tun. I also downloaded Earthbound last night, I haven’t loaded it up yet, and this is a game that I have never played before so I’m looking forward to giving this cult classic a go.
Yesterday we had some friends over and played video games all afternoon. We dabbled in Mario Kart 8, Mario Party 10’s amiibo mode, and some standard smash, eight man smash, and Smash Tour in Super Smash Bros Wii U. I had never gotten around to trying Smash Tour before yesterday, and man is that mode completely chaotic and hard to figure out. I like that it’s faster paced than Mario Party, but I didn’t have a grasp on what I was doing the entire time.
TV/Film
As far as TV goes we have been racing our way through Friends, and we are almost done with it, which I am ready to move on from. I started watching Daredevil and that show is very good! I have minor knowledge of the character, but I have never read any of his comic books or watched the movie from the early 2000’s. The dark tone of the show is perfect, and honestly Gotham’s comeback was a bit of a disappointment after having watched a few episodes of Daredevil.
This weekend we watched They Came Together, starring Amy Poehler, Paul Rudd and damn near everyone else. This was a hilarious spoof of romantic comedies. I recommend checking out the cast, and if you’re a fan of the cast, check out this movie because it is hilarious.
