Alicent Hightower was the only daughter to Otto Hightower, a man who worked for Viserys Targaryen. She never quite understood his job but he appeared good at it. It was through his job that Alicent met Rhaenyra, and so she never saw it as a bad thing. Even when that same job of his resulted in Otto seeing opportunity, and using Alicent to take it.
She was nothing but a bargaining chip, a stool for her father to step on in his reach for power. Viserys was a king and a pawn all at once. Alicent could only dream of that type of power. Nonetheless she obeyed her father, and in doing so shattered her longstanding friendship to Rhaenyra.
The years went by, Alicent bore Viserys sons and a daughter, though he never loved them like he did Rhaenyra. Eventually the man passed on, and what relief Alicent may have felt was tainted by the fear of what would become of her children. She was not like her father, she would never sell them to another, however the Targaryen's had enemies and her children were just as adept at making them too.
So Robb Stark was her answer. It was a mutually beneficial relationship. He was running for office and she was the perfect first lady. Both knew it was a farce but it worked for them both. At least this time Alicent chose the lie she lived.
