RUBIO'S COASTAL GRILL
28NOV16 Pacific Beach 7.99USD (Baja Grill Burrito) 9.5"
Tortilla
Rather diminutive and halved but presented nicely. Cooked after having been wrapped for a little more rigidity and crunch.
Meat
Higher quality than some of the cat/racoon/mystery meat passed of as carne asada at some of the other big-name chains. Definitely steak-flavored steak.
Ingredients
Cheese, pico de gallo, and guac. Pico's time to shine! Also the cheese and guac coated to roof of the tortilla with enough impact to taste without overstuffing the burrito.
Salsa
Half a dozen reds and green; the Diablo sauce has a kick, and the chipotle was almost more sweet than smoky.
Other
While not technically a California Burrito, any culinary catalog of San Diego would be remiss without mentioning Rubio's. Over thirty years ago they turned an Orange Julius here in Pacific Beach into an embassy of Baja-style tacos, and this qualify fast food empire has been expanding ever since. Obviously known for their seafood, Rubio's is a welcome alternative to Taco Bell or some of the other, shittier, places to go in PB. This expansive shop is manned with friendly service and sports a very clean interior.
Pairs with:
Fountain Coke Zero, no ice.
Overall Score
6.75. Maybe unfair to judge them by anything other than their well-known forte, but wgas.
