Our worlds are really very different. Maybe we can manage to combine the best from both.

MAXTON HALL: THE WORLD BETWEEN US (2024-) Season 2, Episode 2—Wish to the Universe
Defending Ruby Bell with words isn’t enough, I need a gun, because she did nothing wrong by asserting her boundaries and not sticking around in a painful situation that she knew she wasn’t equipped to fix. She’s a normal girl from a well adjusted family, she has no experience dealing with bereavement and substance abuse, and even then the day after James broke her heart spectacularly (he is her first love, by the way, and it was two days after Oxford!) she still ran to his house to comfort him. Whenever she put walls up she still showed that she wanted him to be okay. She was supporting his sister the entire time when he couldn’t, of course because she is compassionate but also because she loved James. Girlie had more compassion than most of the male-centric weirdos criticizing her could muster in a year, if the shoe were on any of their feet.
Oh and by the way, people who are mindlessly labelling James as an irredeemable cheat are also wrong. His main problem was substance abuse and lashing out, given his emotional state and trauma. At the party, he was drunk and high (you later see that he had cocaine in his pocket). He was in no position to consent to anything. I personally hate that he kissed Elaine, but you can’t equate a grieving, traumatized and drugged up 18-year-old boy’s actions to that of grown men with wandering eyes who consensually cheat while stone-cold sober. He was wrong to think he could still ask Ruby to completely be there for him, just because he needed her. And he got the necessary backlash from her for it. He went to therapy, he learned his lesson. In real life many guys would never turn over a new leaf, but James is clearly not like that. If Ruby had never forgiven him, I would understand that, but if she takes him back after he has done the work, she shouldn’t get heavily criticized for it. She is neither a doormat, nor a heartless monster.
