Ambush hug: Ruby Corentin + Evaline Aurorir

Evaline was tired. She’d studied all through the night for her alchemy test, and had still been made to get up early for magical shift practice. It was very unlike her, everyone around her agreed, to see her yawn and stare of into space instead of taking meticulous notes in her lessons.

They were quite worried about her, when she left the lesson without saying a polite farewell to the teacher, or waving at her fellow oznitus students on her way to the door. Maybe she was unwell? Had she been overworking herself?

Their worries proved to be groundless, as Evaline turned the corner and saw ahead of her in the hallways a familiar sheen of red, heading in the opposite direction from her. Her droopy eyes widened, and a wide grin split across her face. Her posture straightened, and she stood up on the balls of her feet, making a beeline for her favourite munchkin.

Ruby was walking to lunch with Theos, as was not uncommon for her. He was telling her about a new cloak he had come into possession of, possibly belonging to the wicked witch in the past. The way his eyes sparkled as he spoke and the animation in his voice had Ruby completely enraptured, as she hummed and nodded along next to him. Her attention was focused completely on him, to the extent that she didn’t notice a certain blonde first-year sneaking up behind her.

“RUBY~Y!!!!!!” Evaline cheered, flinging herself over Ruby’s shoulder and burying her head in the crook of her neck, smiling as she squeezed her. “Just the person I was looking for!”

“Evaline? Where did you come from?” Ruby said, her eyes widening in surprise as she tried to turn around to get a look at her attacker.

“I just got let out of class~” Evaline hummed, reaching up to poke Ruby’s cheeks fondly, and ignoring the redheads attempts to swat her wandering hands away. “And let me tell you, munchkin, it felt like the longest history lesson i’ve e~ever been in!”

“Again with the munchkin?” Ruby pouted, but her protest was halfhearted, as she returned Evaline’s enthusiastic hug with a gentle squeeze of the hand. “You both are as bad as each other.” she said, with a pointed look at Theos, but there was a twinkle in her eyes that could only be mistaken for happiness.

A surprise hug was definitely one way to start her lunchtime.
