Ruby Rose has similarities with Jack Sparrow and it’s funny as heck to consider.
Ways that they’re similar:
1. They’re dishonest. 2. You never know what the hell they’re going to do, and when they start doing stuff that makes no sense, you as a member of the real world audience and the characters in the series all have to play catch up. 3. Their morality fluctuates and usually has to do with what they’re feeling or what they decide is best in the moment. 4. They have a very small group of people they’re for the most part loyal to, but as a general rule, they only work with others for convenience and can and will turn on them if they’re unhappy. 5. They do these ridiculous things that by all rights shouldn’t work, but you’re like... Okay, so a. they get by on mostly luck, and b. they’re the money-making face of this goddamn series, so they can hardly die. 6. They both ‘die’ and wind up on some island they have to leave in order to rejoin the plot and take care of the growing battle going on in the world while they were stuck on this island. 7. Both of them do things to change the body of their friend in order to stop their friend from dying. 8. Both of them are part of a series that has had a steady decline in quality, and with the series, they’ve declined as protagonists. At first, they were interesting and likable with a lot of good qualities and fun dynamics, then (around movie three / volumes 4 and 5) they started seeming a bit out there and a bit lackluster, but still had some really good and even emotional moments to make you really care about them. But then more content came out (movies four and five and series six through eight,) and you’re like ‘how did they take this likable and interesting protagonist and turn them into such an obnoxious and hard to like person that I wish was no longer even around anymore?’ Like, they’re acting so different from the character they originally were that you can’t even bother to care anymore and don’t consider it really ‘the character’ at all.
Like, obviously there are some major differences. Besides the obvious, Jack feels like he comes up with plans quick and is very good at thinking on his feet, whereas Ruby just seems to *do shit* and then rely on the writers dumb luck to win. Ruby is better intentioned at the very least, trying to save the world even if sometimes she seems really selfish and focused on her friend group, whereas Jack is as a rule really selfish and when he isn’t and does try to save people / help the world, it’s him going against his base instincts to do the right thing. Jack is open about and aware of his character flaws, whereas Ruby doesn’t even seem to be aware that she has them. Jack’s friends and followers are also aware of his flaws and failings, some of them working around them and within them like Gibbs whereas some like Jack and Elizabeth aren’t afraid to call him out or go against him, and by contrast, Ruby’s friends and followers all go along with what she wants even if they don’t agree and look up to her as a hero.
It’s just very amusing to think of these similarities that exist between these two characters. And now I want to watch Pirates of the Caribbean.
