Rubael - Coffee shop AU
Ruby walked into the crowded coffee shop around the corner on her way to work. She wanted to get her usual cup of morning coffee with sugar.
She expected it to be like any other day, but it wasn't. Next to her at the bar was a blonde woman, about her age, drinking a cup of herbal tea with a peppermint on the side. It laid lonely on the plate like she was avoiding it on purpose.
Ruby smiled and decided to introduce herself to the girl when she noticed that she had noticed her staring and looked straight at her. "Hi, I'm Ruby." She shook her hand. "I haven't seen you around here before, who are you?"
The woman smiled as well. "My name is Hael."
"That's an unconventional name."
"I know, my parents tend to get a bit weird. They even like peppermint flavoured drinks, they don't understand why I don't like it."
Dammit, why did this woman have to be so perfect? She was pretty as hell, cute as fuck and now they had a thing they both hated?
"I like that peppermint is used to fight bad breath and that is really nice and fresh, just, not in my drink," she ultimately said.
Hael smirked. "It doesn't belong in something liquid. I agree with you there."
Ruby gestured for her to come closer and pointed at a man in the distance, happily chatting with his wife, the sound of his laughter overpowering the song Strangers in the background.
"That's Clover. He likes his herbal tea with more peppermint than anything else."
She then drew Hael's attention to a boy and a girl on their third date. "The lady over there, the one with the scar, I once saw her put some peppermint in her coffee."
"That's barbaric," Hael mused, "That's just ruining the bitter and slightly burned flavour of coffee. I think it would actually make you drowsy."
"I know, right?"
For the next hour - Ruby tended to be early - the two of them talked about all sorts of things, including their mutual hatred for peppermint flavoured drinks. They also talked about their hobbies and Ruby was impressed to hear Hael did acrobatics and boxing. Not to mention, she had a great sense of humour.
She had always had more difficulty starting a conversation with a man and she had always been more attracted to girls in the first place.
"I really should go," Hael then said, standing up, "It was nice meeting you and talking. Usually, I just sit alone, like you, watching with disgust as someone is trying to make something with minty flavour."
Ruby watched as she left after having said goodbye, before leaving herself. As she walked through the double door, she thought about the fact that she was probably never going to see her again, a wave of melancholy hitting her with great force. However, a smile appeared on her face soon after when she took a look at the piece of paper she found in the pocket of her leather jacket.
There was a phone number and written underneath, in neat handwriting, a message, Call me, even if it's just about the peppermint ;)
She held her hand up high, her day having been made. She walked towards the high buildings to continue working on one of her many projects for the newspaper. All the while, she thought, Don't worry, I will.
