Just two days to go.... Prince Sun Wukong crossed his arms, leaning against the frame of the archway of one of the castle’s balconies as his golden furred tail swayed gently and peacefully behind him. He wore a proud smile as he watched his soldiers sparring below in the courtyard. Two more days, and he’d have to appoint one as his personal bodyguard. But I already know who I want.
His gaze fell on the smallest form on the field- the only female contestant left. Three other soldiers, all much taller, tried their best to gain the prince’s favor, but Sun had had his eye on the girl since she first joined the guard. This had greatly perturbed the other soldiers, all of whom thought little of Ruby Rose, the fiery female, equating her value and skill to her stature. But they had known Sun was partial to her and tried every way they could to show him how much ‘better’ than her they were. This often resulted in the boys trying to trip her up, humiliate her, and otherwise make her look bad in front of Sun. But Sun was no virgin to manipulation and saw to it they received their just desserts, usually pranking them in front of Ruby to cheer the poor girl up. She had fought so hard to get where she was, so loyally, with such strength of body and character. I couldn’t imagine anyone else more fitting.
He stepped up to the railing of the balcony and leaned over it to look below. Ruby was pairing off against a slender male with silver hair and quick feet, Mercury Black. The boy was strong and quick and clever. Sun found his chances almost equal to Ruby’s in skill, and he sometimes felt bad that the lad was fighting so hard knowing he couldn’t win in the end. But there will still be a place for him in the army, Sun reassured himself with a grin. “Hey, Black!” the prince called down, laughter in his voice, “Watch her movements closely! You may be quick, but Rose can trip you up like a cat on the stairs!”
