Going on a hike for the day? Here is what to take in your rucksack

There are some essentials that no hiker should ever be without, so here's a handy guide for what to pack when you hit the trails for your next walking adventure.

Pack A Nutritious Picnic

If you are planning a day's walking, it's best to bear in mind that this could entail up to 20 miles of being on your feet - making it vital to have enough snacks to keep your energy levels high. Popular foods among serious walkers include nut-based trail bars, Kendall mint cake and biltong (cured beef). Long-lasting, calorie-rich foods are always a good idea, particularly if you are spending a few days in the wilderness.

Remember to Take Plenty of Fluids

Dehydration can be a killer, so carry with you at least two liters of water whenever you head out for the day. It might add extra weight, but taking on regular fluids is essential if you want to enjoy the experience as much as possible. Heat stroke and dehydration can creep up quickly, so try to drink every half an hour at least.

Get the Best Views

There's no sense in hiking to remote hilltops if once you arrive, you can't see the view properly. Always pack a good camera and binoculars, as well as any glasses you require.

Be Prepared For Any Medical Problems

Hiking can be a dangerous activity, so it's best to take some basic first aid items like plasters, antiseptic cream, bandages and painkillers with you. If you have special requirements, like antihistamines to deal with hay fever, or glasses to improve your vision, make sure you don't forget those, either.

You might also want to take a good multi-purpose knife, as well as matches, a torch and batteries, but these aren't essential for short hikes. With enough food, drink, medical supplies and visual aids, you'll be able to make the most of your hike - so happy trails!
