He spoke about the many critiques and conversations surrounding his images and the types of stories he covers. Ruddy maintains that photography for him is not just about taking a picture, but that there is a story behind each of his images. We the viewers have to be able to identify with the situations to be able to fully understand these stories. He explained that the way he was raised, his Jamaican culture and upbringing nurtured by the music had the biggest impact on the work he does today. Protest, race, and the work of Ruddy Roye

Ruddy Roye is “different” than other photographers. 

“Everyday I go out to shoot I have an agenda, a word in mind,” Roye said. “Isolation, invisible, hopelessness, homelessness.”

To that end, Roye’s Instagram photos bare the authenticity and simple elegance of everyday life. Many of them are revealing candid shots bent on capturing moments, whether from protests or just people from the street. Few of them are staged and all of them are properly centered on their star, sitting on a car, . 

The environment is as much a character as the human in the photo. “The humanist eye” beautifully captures such themes in the southern cotton field Robert Scott stands in as a black man, hands up in surrender and defiance, encapsulating historical and racial context in a single image.

As Roye describes it, his work is about people interacting with the world and the world interacting with them. He is “not a king” but an observer, a storyteller, and an activist intent on telling stories no one else will tell.

“I fight for [Reuben] visually. Images burn, images stain,” Roye said. “I need to know that story and push it out because no one else will.”

That Roye’s work is additionally done through smartphones afford Roye an intimacy not given to other photographers. A tiny smartphone allow him to obtain closer shots from subjects less intimidated by the huge lens of a DSLR camera. Roye’s photos are ones anyone could theoretically take and of people anyone could meet.

Moreover, Roye’s work embodies a humility on his part and instills a dignity on the part of his photographic “collaborators.”

“I hate the word ‘subjects’,” Roye said. “I’m not a king.”

One would have to be a very ignorant fool (to say the least) to say that racism is not problem in the world. Of course it doesn't affect everybody, as it takes a person to submit another fellow human being to it. There is racism everywhere in the world! As there are ignorant & selfish individuals everywhere. It is the sad truth. In life It is up to each individual to educate oneself, to search wisdom, knowledge & understanding. AND we are supposed to treat others the way we want to be treated. The human ego of course can easily oppose that. The more I have learnt that there is not only individuals that are racists, but that there is systematic institutionalized racism, that racism towards individuals of color is so deeply rooted in the "way of life" in America that in spite of all the protests no REAL CHANGE has occurred in the past 50 years. Of course there have been some improvements. But it is still an issue bigger than just the individual racist ignorant mindset. At the gallery opening, I for the first time saw issues of 'The Black Panther Community News Service', a weekly periodical with national & international distribution, first published April 25, 1967 and then weekly until 1976. In its heyday, the Party sold several hundred thousand copies of the newspaper per week. The graphics of #EmoryDouglas in some exhibited copies blew me away! Not only as an artist, but it is as if some were made TODAY, hitting the nail of the Status Quo in 2016 on the head! Scary, Sad, and yes it's APPALLING!
