#MapMondays!! Olmstead & Vaux's original 1868 map for Prospect Park. While Central Park is the golden child of The New York City Parks Department, receiving somewhere around 40 million visitors a year, another major park in the city, designed by the same firm, might be the true favorite. Prospect Park, built in the 1860s by #Olmstead & Vaux (famous landscape designers at the time), has a storied history. Shown here is a map of the original design plan - Notice the large multiple pavilions just to the left of the lake at the top of the map. One of these was to be used for a restaurant with cascading terraces; other cancelled projects include an observation tower, and a carriage concourse (now the location of Lefrak Center). This was in part due to the economic panic of 1873, and the ballooning cost - in 1860, an act authorizing the construction called for a budget to not exceed $300,000. Upon completion, the full bill was $9,919,370. However, when the park was built, it was ahead of its time; Olmsted created a drainage system for the park that fed runoff into the streams and lakes, and it’s still in use today. And unlike Central Park where you can see the surrounding city, #ProspectPark features rolling hills, and curving walkways, paths and roads that give the impression of unending space. If you fancy a visit to prospect park, be sure to explore the other civic institutions that use the park as an anchor; directly to to east is The #BrooklynBotanicGardens and the #BrooklynMuseum. The North point, Grand Army Plaza, houses the #BrooklynLibrary, a #Beaux-Art landmarked structure, which took nearly three decades to build. (at Prospect Park)

While I am not always the biggest fan of JAY's social commentary or hyper-capitalism, this exhibition of his many accomplishments is quite expansive, impressive and inspiring.
