Absolutely losing my shit over Conor’s internal turmoil in Not In Love
Did your sister finally get a new car? High time. Thank god Maya isn’t driving a death trap anymore. Why didn’t I buy her a new car? Did someone buy her a new car?
I parked behind [what I thought was Maya’s] Kia, and you’re going to need some crazy maneuvers to get out. I’m going to park behind this goddam new car so she can’t leave without needing me.
not in love by ali hazelwood
Would I be killed if I said a romance between Rue and Hark would have been more interesting for Ali Hazelwood's Not in Love?
Currently reading: Not in love
And I think the title summarises my feelings precisely. And before anyone points it out-
Yes, I knew this was different than Ali’s other books.
Yes, I did go in with my expectations managed.
No, I do not mind the smut.
Now that we have all that out of the way, here is my gripe-
I am almost 40% through and I am yet to encounter anything that can be remotely labelled chemistry. Erotic romance doesn’t negate chemistry, in fact it is quite the essential ingredient. And I am not talking about chemistry between the main characters (even though it sure is a messy plate) but even the side characters, the friends, the supporting cast and so forth.
Ali’s seamless dialogues that are full of wit, mirth, quirkiness are painfully missing and its not for lack of trying. She has tried but it just hasn’t landed so far.
The plot twist can be seen from miles and miles away. But I reckon we don’t read these books for the plot but the characters, the science, the unique something that makes Ali’s FMCs one of the key things that stand out. But here? Rue and Eli are so unidimensional.
I get it she doesn’t emote but that doesn’t mean she has to be a blank slate, cardboard cutout of a robot even during intimate emotionally toned scenes. And Eli, well his inner monologue is just painful. It appears he is only into her because she is pretty and presents a challenge. There is no real reason for the obsession. Its all so insta-lusty its hilarious. And even that isn’t done well. The intimate scenes are a pain to read, and this is coming from someone who has never had major issues with Ali’s writing in this regard in the past.
I will continue reading but I gotta say so far Ali has missed the mark of an off-beat erotic romance.
