not in love by ali hazelwood
So this was falling for someone. A ruthless expansion of the senses. The meticulous, unintentional cataloging of a person’s head tilt, the shape their hand made around a wineglass, the little tells in their gaze.
- Not in Love, Ali Hazelwood
Would I be killed if I said a romance between Rue and Hark would have been more interesting for Ali Hazelwood's Not in Love?
“Your damn mouth,” he murmered, “is the most obscenely lovely thing I’ve ever had the burden of seeing.”

“Not in Love” Thoughts
By Ali Hazelwood
⭐️: 0/5
I just finished reading the book, and I’m repulsed.
Eli Killgore is a sleaze (and not just because he works in PE).
Rue Siebert has as much personality as a cardboard box.
And I did not need to read their messed up “confessions” to one another throughout the entire book. It made me feel as dirty and disgusting as this poorly written erotica novel.
I love that Hazelwood writes about women in STEM, but there wasn’t a lot of science and too many “quirky”, horny characters- it was overkill. I’d expect that from her teens in Check&Mate, not whatever this mess of a book was.
Some people choose quality over quantity, Ali Hazelwood is not one of them. She’s tossing out books left and right and they’re getting worse and worse.
I’m so disappointed
Currently reading: Not in love
And I think the title summarises my feelings precisely. And before anyone points it out-
Yes, I knew this was different than Ali’s other books.
Yes, I did go in with my expectations managed.
No, I do not mind the smut.
Now that we have all that out of the way, here is my gripe-
I am almost 40% through and I am yet to encounter anything that can be remotely labelled chemistry. Erotic romance doesn’t negate chemistry, in fact it is quite the essential ingredient. And I am not talking about chemistry between the main characters (even though it sure is a messy plate) but even the side characters, the friends, the supporting cast and so forth.
Ali’s seamless dialogues that are full of wit, mirth, quirkiness are painfully missing and its not for lack of trying. She has tried but it just hasn’t landed so far.
The plot twist can be seen from miles and miles away. But I reckon we don’t read these books for the plot but the characters, the science, the unique something that makes Ali’s FMCs one of the key things that stand out. But here? Rue and Eli are so unidimensional.
I get it she doesn’t emote but that doesn’t mean she has to be a blank slate, cardboard cutout of a robot even during intimate emotionally toned scenes. And Eli, well his inner monologue is just painful. It appears he is only into her because she is pretty and presents a challenge. There is no real reason for the obsession. Its all so insta-lusty its hilarious. And even that isn’t done well. The intimate scenes are a pain to read, and this is coming from someone who has never had major issues with Ali’s writing in this regard in the past.
I will continue reading but I gotta say so far Ali has missed the mark of an off-beat erotic romance.
