I also want to talk about the elephant in the room, which IMO is this rug:
The “Twilight Rug.” Designing it was tough. See, my friend was going through a big Twilight phase, and originally I just wanted to have an apple + her name. But it didn’t look right to me, so I decided- why not use all four book covers?
The apple/flower/ribbon/chess piece are altered or simplified, but they’re there. And I put the name “twilight” in the (approximate) font at the bottom, and used white lines to separate each ‘cover image.’
The problem is that the design is ultimately a little cluttered. Worst of all, the ‘twilight’ is sort of unreadable. With a 3600-count rug, there’s just not a lot of room to write things. And having the words be 1 thread wide was not a good idea because it gets crowded out by the black threads.
The design is a little clearer from the back:
but that’s not how the rug is meant to be seen, and I would definitely redo it if I could. I know my friend is a very kind person, and she’ll still be happy! I just wish I could have made her a more legible rug. And one that’s more relevant to her interests. I took so long that the Twilight phase might be over. Lol.
Rug lessons learned:
-Never make borders that are 1 thread wide
-Be really careful with words on small rugs
-The computer design will always be clearer On The Computer
-Account for the fleeting nature of passion
-Centering is your friend!
