Amsterdam Rugmakers
Amsterdam, NY (1938-1942, 1946-1951)
Mohawk Carpet Mills was a major employer in the town of Amsterdam, New York, and it, along with another carpet manufacturer, gave Amsterdam the nickname of “Carpet City.”

In 1938, Mohawk Mills established a team in the Canadian-American League and named it, appropriately enough, the Rugmakers. The team, Affiliated with the New York Yankees, disbanded for World War II, and then restarted again after the war ended, but only lasted until 1951, when the Canadian-American League folded.
