Chapter 2: Time Will Tell.
Summary: Could there be a world that would be accepting of kinship between an ape and a human? It's only by chance that you came across him, an ape who craves more of the outside world beyond his clans borders. Will there be common ground, or will your past prevent you from making the same mistakes?
Rating: No Warnings.
A/N: It's coming along. I'm actually glad that I'm pushing myself to write this series because it helps broaden my horizons by using new synonyms I haven't before and just creates potential works I could possibly come up with for the future.
Who would've thought you would put yourself in this position?
Your body on autopilot as you threw your hand out into the boundless open sky that often embraced your deepest regrets and unrelenting dread, the red lining depths transitioning into clear blue that painted the horizon bathing you in the dawn.
The fear sweat lining your palms as your hands gripped into his furry forearm, the sockets of your arms trembling under the muscular weight that your unyielding grip refuses to release.
You could see his eyes taking you in, the tremble of disbelief that is trying to register this scene into his mind. You're just as shocked as him. Risking yourself for someone who may just hate your humanness to the core, your existence nothing more than a pest that should be eradicated from the earth, his very species have overruled.
It didn't matter to you at that moment. His scream of panic set off a feeling a little too known to you, uncapped a painful reality.
“Mind giving me a little help?” The ground below painfully flattens the pressure from your lungs, compensated by pulling backwards into the safety of the shelter, you wondered if once he made it into safe ground would he plunder his fists into the vulnerability of your back? Your bones crushing under the sheer power of the devastating blows, entirely ridding you of all life that clings to every vein and tendon..would your life be the consequence of saving his?
All questions but no answers as you help this ape from his untimely death, a death you had no will to bear witness to. As you pull him over the ledge with the help of his mustered strength, you're taken aback, the flashes of a what if passing before your eyes..he's shrouded by a figure that is not of himself but another, another that no longer walks this earth, that has long since ascended far from the soil you walked upon.
The rays that shone down on him honeyed his fur, his hackles raised in what seemed like a state of shock, the green of his eyes reminding you of the meadows that you used to frequent, the flecks of gold only adding the marigold accent of your memories, he held wild flowers in his irises.
“Are you okay?..” The question came out almost strangled, the allure but fear that struck down on you as you gazed upon your potential undoing, he could very well be your bane, the cause of your own untimely death.
The resounding hollers of his companions make you tremble with trepidation, the quiver of your lip catching his attention, you resembled an alarmed fawn, just awaiting the moment to bolt in hopes of evading oncoming danger.
You looked worse for wear and he felt a pull of empathy, he was unsure of you but you saved him and there was gratitude that gnawed at his mind, he was stuck in a limbo at your presence to even begin to express it, his emotions hitting him from all incoming sides.
Soona and Anaya grab onto Noa as soon as they reach the alcove, checking him over, not yet noticing the human staring awkwardly at the scene, unsure of what to do or say. Noa extends his hand, pointing before he finally utters
“She saved me..” There was no malice, no distaste in his tone, just pure awe and it startled you when his companions quickly looked to you, their own expressions of astonish overtaking their faces. There was a fuckton of unease coursing through your body right now, the tingling running from your fingertips down to your toes almost made you lightheaded, not only are you being stared down by 3 apes but there was no escape plan for this kind of scenario, the hole in the wall would do little to absolutely no good of protecting you.
“I didn't want you to die..” It was a half truth, you truly didn't want him to meet his end but your body reacted by second nature, the neurons in your brain delayed but the nerves in your body on automatic, it was the oddest thing but you can't say you regretted it.
You are terrorized by remnants of death surrounding you, the thought of your existence being a curse to those around you that overrides every other logical idea that corroded the inners of your brain, if there was a chance to save a soul thrown in front of you, you took it without hesitation.
“Thank you.. My name is Noa.” As he's introducing himself, his hands are signing in a way that was all too familiar to you, you were taught to sign in the same dialect and it sent a wave of nostalgia over you, you were only able to keep your head above water for so long as you're constantly reminded of the life you had no choice of leaving behind.
“I'm (Name), your friends?” You gently gesture to them, hoping that your interest in them shows your docile intentions, they weren't defensive by any means calmed by their friend's peaceful approach, you could tell there is a strong bond between them from the way their eyes stray back and forth between you and Noa, a gleam of trust but unease, they're unsure of your nature and what will come from you being there but they trust Noa enough to know that he'll handle the situation they're presented with
“My friends, Soona and Anaya.” He quickly glances at them with a smile as he reassuringly gestures to them, Anaya almost waves shyly but you think it isn't so much shyness but anxiety and Soona has a mask of protectiveness as she slightly nods at you, you understood the distance as you felt the tension in the back of your neck, you were just as much on edge as they were.
Noa was a stranger to you but his aura gave you what seemed like dejavu, like you've met him before but you know that was impossible, you have never been to this valley before now and you traveled miles from your last location.
“There was more.. of you..” He says in esteem, your eyebrows furrow at his statement, more of you? Did he mean humans who spoke? You knew it was few and far of intelligent humans left. You haven't been in contact with another like you in years, not since losing your mother and others in your tribe.
You step forward the question clear on your face, Noa shows no sign of fear to your movement as he looks you over observing the state of your clothing and the scars that laid home onto your otherwise smooth skin, you posed no threat to them after all you did save his life with no reserve and it was like an opportunity was standing right in front of him, an open door that was tossed open in a form of a Echo who risked their own safety for his sake.
“You've met more humans like me?” There was intrigue that broke through the amazed timbre of your voice, he felt guilt prick at his mind as the reality that Mae just have been the last of intelligent humans left other than you but she was long gone now so he now had no revenlant information to give if you were in search for others like yourself but nonetheless he nodded.
You smiled to yourself as a feeling of unknown unresolved bitterness built up in your heart, despite it being a revelation of knowing there was others out there, you had no motive of going out looking for them, you've lived your life apart from them for so long that there was little to no exigency for their community.
“Are you alone?” Anaya's voice holds no reserve but has a soft edge, it's almost like he has a hunch that you are but not wanting to overstep, Soona shifts looking at her friends before also looking you over, her observations concluding that you aren't dirty nor starving but there's an exhaustion that clings to the delicate skin underneath your eyes, almost like you haven't slept properly in a long time and she can't help feeling pity, if you truly were alone then you had no coverage or protection while your vulnerable body was swept into the throes of sleep. She was cautious of the fleeting nature of humans from her prior experiences with them, but you saved Noa when she wasn't able to, so you have earned a quiet respect from her.
“For a long time now..” Your answer hung in the air, your sadness seeping through the cracks and tainting the atmosphere surrounding, the lure of devastation radiated off of your figure, the day's light shining through the alcove and bathing your figure in warmth, it truly contradicted the cold reality of your situation as the rays envelope you with its illuminating tendrils lightening the deep colouration of your hair and the silky undertone of your skin, such a sad but unusually beautiful sight.
There was so much to humans Noa didn't understand, from what he took from his experience with Mae is that humans can be deceptive but there's a whisper of haunted sorrow to them, resilient but dangerous in many ways, Apes have no reason to not express their motives, their thoughts, and their experiences but humans are a labyrinth of encapsulating enigmas.
A maze that he wanted to run through to better understand their nature, a living history piece that carries these similarities from times long before them, you were a bridge to what he's been looking for.
You may carry the knowledge of things he didn't quite understand.
“It's dangerous..to be out here alone..” His concern is gentle, his envy colored eyes holding a docility that pulls a tremble to your bottom lip. You bite down on it in an attempt to stop it. You were more than aware of that truth, the fear enveloped you as the night skies fell upon you, the shadows that taunted you as you curled into your corner with hopes of daybreak coming on soon just so you could live to see its light break through the horizon another day.
Soona and Anaya look to Noa, knowing the implication he was suggesting, but they put up no counter to his decision. They trusted his judgment but there were doubts that the others in Eagle Clan would be so accepting of having an Echo within their lands, the Elders most definitely would be against such a bold ask, they're old ways of being often backing their rebut to Noa's newer perspectives and courses of action.
He wouldn't miss this opportunity, the opportunity to open himself up to what Raka suggested he learn about the world before him. Finding out why humans meant so much to Caesar and his way of being, but as he looks at you, he can understand the empathy Caesar had for humans. The emotion filled eyes that gazed back at him made his stomach turn but not in an unpleasant way but with familiarity to those he loved, the way he felt when Apes expressed their own sadness.
Humans felt just like Apes did, but do they love the way they do? Build a community like Ape? How alike are they? As he extends his hand out and the question falls from him, he can feel the metaphorical bridge building from under his feet to yours just hoping you'll cross over onto his side to grasp his own hand.
“Will you come with us?” He was not only offering you salvation but genuine connection between you as two different species, and you had an inkling it was exactly that. You are reminded of the past far behind you, the extension of ape to a human to build a connection that was weakened by time and hatred.
Your fingers trembled as you slowly walked that bridge, walked into the unknown of where this could possibly lead you.
Would this only end in blood ash? Or would this bond withstand the history that towered over ape and humankind?
Time would only tell as you gripped his hand into yours, the skin of his palm pressing against your scarred one.
“Yes.”

Chapter 1: What Are The Chances?
Pairing: Noa x Human!Reader
Rating: No Warnings.
Summary: Could there be a world that would be accepting of kinship between an ape and a human? It's only by chance that you came across him, an ape who craves more of the outside world beyond his clans borders. Will there be common ground, or will your past prevent you from making the same mistakes?
A/N: *whispers* is tensions rising? I think it is! Sunset Trio, my babies fr fr 🤧 I promise it's gonna start getting good, I'm just building up the rhythm of the story, I'm looking to add depth to the Reader by giving a back story and such. I really do have some good tropes I'm gonna be adding to this story! Eek, I'm so excited!
Noa, Soona, and Anaya were strictly forbidden on ever approaching the ruins by the Elders, Noa abided by their laws with obstinate obedience, there was no reason to stray from the laws he was taught since he was a child, he was the son of the Master of birds, there was a different standard he had to uphold of himself, the need to impress his father since he was young overshadowing his every action throughout most of his life.
Now that he's seen the outside world for what it is and learning what it takes to be the leader that he could potentially be, he wants to learn all there is about this world that lay beyond the clan’s lands, meeting both Raka and Mae has drastically changed his perspective on the life they could conceivably have, building the village up with his comprehensive knowledge.
He wandered through these ruined structures, on a mission to bring his people back home but now as he stands before the crumbling formations, he takes in just how massive they are and wonders of the history it holds in its stone walls, just how much intelligence the people who built them long before his time, the memories they withheld as time eroded their substantial walls.
It was very different compared to their own architecture and he wondered of the materials that were used to build this mastery that still stood in the face of time, something he couldn't help but admire as he observed the greenery that ascended up the entirety of the form.
Anaya and Soona stood a few yards in front of him, also acknowledging the giant structure in all its ruined glory, the valley finally theirs to take in with gleeful wonder, the absolute enigma that they were forbidden to ever come close to, feelings of childlike fascination encapsulating them.
They look back to Noa with brimming excitement. “Noa, come!” Anaya called bounding forward, Soona following close behind. He watches as Anaya expertly scales up the walls, when he reaches a decent height above he looks out at the landscape in the distance, admiring the stretch of mainland that extends to the coast harboring the sea beyond that, he remembered the coast as he was dragged by Sylva with Mae close behind, the unfamiliar feeling of the grainy sensation under his feet the memory tainted by the tightness of the rope tied around his wrists, he one day wanted to travel back to reclaim those memories for better ones, preferably by his own choice.
“You're too slow, Noa!” He yells down to him, a goofy grin lining his face, Soona scolds Anaya smacking the back of his head fighting back a grin of her own as he leaned too far from the safety of the structure for her liking.
Noa has always thought of this moment, a time where him being able to experience and explore the lands that laid past the borders of the clan, the old him was content with following the law given by the Elders, there was no ‘why’ it was just law, it was law to always leave behind 1 egg in the wild eagles nest, it was law to not go past the borders.
After the liberation of his clan and the rebuilding of their home, he came out on the side with a different motives, he questioned the world around him, he wanted to know the answers to everything he could possibly learn, Raka taught him the words of Caesar and he's thought back on it often, wondering just how much significance those words could possibly course his life, extending a olive branch to Mae by giving her Caesar's pendant a moving stone of his want for a peaceful world, a life both for ape and humankind.
As he looks up, taking in the sight of his friends above him, he grabs onto the foliage covering that lined the structure, pulling and pushing his way up, his spread feet gripping onto the ledge and jumping up towards the height they sat on awaiting his arrival. “Who would've known we'd see this” Soona speaks, her hand reaching out almost as if she was showcasing the sight before them, the feeling of reverence overtaking him as his green eyes followed the dawn of light from the cracking skies, the cloud taking in the coloration of the heavens.
“Elders forbid adventure, boring. Now, Noa Clan Leader, we can explore outside world.” Anaya remarks as he observes the inside of the structure, the cracked and water stained walls lined with green vines giving off a rustic and derelict kind of beauty, his hand tracing the half paneled floors. The unsettled creaking released under his footsteps, the wind resembling the rushing sound of a stream from this high up, the valley a host of diffident sound.
“Elders didn't know or didn't want to know, I do.” Noa states, he wanted to be different to the Elders, he refused to be confined to old traditions and laws, he wanted to be more than that. A future full of knowledge from expeditions of the outside world, keeping an open mind to those who could possibly help advance their education, they don't have to seclude themselves anymore, they have room to learn and he's determined to make it happen.
“We'll always follow you” Soona affirms, her hand reassuringly squeezing his upper arm, Anaya chitters his arm thrown across Noa's shoulders. “Follow the leader.” Noa only rolls his eyes, his head following the movement in exaggeration to his words.
“Nothing has changed.. I am the same Noa.” He's felt uncomfortable with the thought of having a higher status now as Clan Leader, the towering prospect that he'll have to fill in the position his father withheld for so long, he was supposed to learn all there was to know from his father but now he's learning as he goes, the mistakes overshadowing his every action, his choices not only affect him but his loved one and the members of the clan, it's a difficult pill to swallow and the self deprecated thoughts obscure his mind but he'll have no choice but accept his imperative role as Master of Birds.
“Yeah, same stupid Noa.” Anaya brings him into a headlock, wrangling him in his grip, they hoot and holler as they play into the monkeyshines, Soona exasperatedly watching from the sidelines laughing when Anaya jumps off Noa's back and grabbing on to the sturdy vines, swinging a foot away from him cackling. “Anaya the stupid one.” Noa says, shaking his head, looking at the vines testing the sturdiness of them, the gears turning in his head.
They were only half way up the formation and he admired just how much nature has engulfed the area, the ruins carrying the accents of green as far as the eye can see, the room they were standing in held no remnants of another living being occupying the space but he could see scorches on the floor near the middle of the room, almost as if there was a fire place that was once placed there.
In the corner of the room, there's a sheet of cloth in what seemed like a makeshift bed but he didn't smell anything unusual, just a waft of mint that lingered within the space so he didn't bring his observations to Soona and Anaya's attention. If there was someone here at some point, then they must have moved on long ago. But were they of human or ape descent?
The question gnawed at his subconscious as he knelt picking up a rock formated into a spear head, the rough edges digging into the tough skin of his fingers, there was a hole drilled in the crevice of the top, he was sure it was once a necklace, a K initial carved into the center. A unknown feeling of desolation washed over him as he turned the stone in his fingers, he doesn't linger any longer as he places it in his satchel, this stone had a meaning and he was unsure whether he'll ever find answers to it but the compelling feeling to keep it with him overtook his senses.
“Race you to the top!” Anaya declares already swinging his way up to the upper level, Noa quickly following behind soona as she curves behind the pillar and up the tendril, her voice resonant as she calls Anaya's name. Noa feels hesitant as he looks up at the levels above him, but he pushes it aside, following after his friends, joining their hooting laughter. He felt off as if he was missing something, a presence that sent a chill up his spine, though it could possibly be a figment of his own mind, his thoughts obscured and potent as the feeling stuck to the corners of his thoughts.
As they climbed their way through the levels of the structure, what could it be? What had him feel as he was on the cusp of eager fascination, cocooning his intrigue to the unknown, was it this structure, or was it something else? His train of thought was cut off when the stone of the ledge crumbled under the weight of his hand, a screech bellowed from him as he felt his body fall through the air, his body became a numb husk as he felt the his weightlessness descent, his body automatically trying to grasp onto anything by innate need to save himself from this cruel and unprophetsized end.
Just when he thought he was a goner and there was no hope of anything materializing before him, that he'll meet his end just when he thought this was the beginning for not only him but his village, the village that needed him to lead them into a brighter future, a future that would make his mother and father proud of his accomplishments as the newly appointed Master of Birds, he felt the warmth and desperate struggling strength of someone else grabbing onto his forearm.
A dark figure cascaded by a hood shadowing over their face, their hands digging into his forearm hard enough to get to his skin. he could hear their grunt of exertion carrying his dead weight, Noa stared up at them with stunned silence, his voice giving out at this humanoid figure. As the person pulled him up with whatever strength they could muster, their hood flew back from the harsh winds coming in revealing their face, it truly was an Echo, an Echo he felt the presence of but had no idea they were truly there.
The way their hair flew back from the wind breezing in, their eyes holding a panicked urgency down at him, their teeth biting down on their plush lips, the bluntness of their teeth shining through the gap.
“Mind giving me a little help?” You heavily breathe, your feet skidding on the concrete as you continue pulling him half way into the space, the struggle clear in by the way the veins bulging from the tops of your hands, your head cocked to the right at the strain. He could feel himself nod as his free hand pulled him further up, the stupor still encrusting his every move in doing so.
Soona and Anaya holler for him, hurriedly climbing their way down, he still hasn't mustered up his voice in answering their desperate calls, he's too much mystified by you, by your presence.
“Are you okay?..” The softness of your voice and the fidget in your movements captures his attention. What are the chances that an Echo would save him? He knew that something was amiss when looking into the expanse of that area. He had a feeling of your presence, but he never would have thought he would find you.
Another intelligent being that went out of your way to saving him, the words of Proximus' echoing in his mind ‘where there's one, there's more.’ he was right, there was more intelligent humans out there, and you just so happened to be one who saved his life. What are the chances?

Prologue : Promising Prospect.
Pairing: Noa x Human!Reader
Rating: No Warning.
Summary: Could there be a world that would be accepting of kinship between an ape and a human? It's only by chance that you came across him, an ape who craves more of the outside world beyond his clans borders. Will there be common ground, or will your past prevent you from making the same mistakes?
A/N: Hi, hello. Welcome to Prologue of Ruins, a story consisting of healing trauma and finding love within a world that's working against you. I'm proud of what I've written so far, i hope you like it❤️
The desolate structures that surrounded you held no warmth, the thoughts of life that cohabited this lonely formation of stone clouded your mind, images of people like you and their families going about their lives with no idea of the demise of their towering future crumbling into rubble with you sitting right in the middle of what remains.
You had no idea what life was like when your species ruled the earth but you knew of the things they left behind, the history that was ingrained into the minds of humans and apes alike, you knew of the shared hatred that you took no part in between the groups.
You’ve struggled between the tides of the world surrounding you. You were born in a time that held no home for you, a world that will tear every strand of familiarity that resembles humankind.
You've seen the ragged savagery between humankind and apes alike, the fighting and the ash that chokes out every hope that could possibly breathe life into the hatred that lies between them. The deep slash on your palm a reminder that you bleed the same, he bled the same, his blood seeped into yours as you promised that you would never resort to the tragedies that befell him and his people, the light in eyes flickering and dying out like the fires that surrounded you.
He told you to run and to never look back, and you didn’t. How could you trail back to a home that was no longer in existence, the once welcoming arms of those who sunk in death's embrace, you only wish you went with them but you pushed on with no destination in mind or heart, only the will to survive.
You rode on horseback for hours until you reached this monolith graveyard, a headstone of a past long lost that would serve you, hiding within its crumbling walls lined with mother earth’s vine-like embrace.
You only wished for peace, a life without hardship and bloodshed, but there was hardly any space like that for a human. That place was burned to cinders.
No place for a human like you.
•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•
Life in the ruins is excruciatingly lonely. It's the same routine for you. You don't allow yourself to get too comfortable within this space. You are not only exposed to the elements but to whoever else who decides to explore the structure.
You aren't afraid of defending yourself, you just don't want it to come down to that again, you hide in the shadows of these old structures making sure to leave little to no evidence of you behind wherever you decide to hunker down for the night. You clean up the fireplaces, alternate between two sheets you use to sleep, washing them after use to rid of your natural smell.
You bathe in the nearby lake daily and use natural mint leaves to mask your scent, pulling the smell onto your everyday clothes. You make sure not to leave behind any food scrapes and no fires into the dead of night. You'd rather not be found by any wanderers that way.
You struggle with this new life, you used to have community and protection but now it's all gone, the ringing in your ears from the silence surrounding you damn near pulling you into a psychosis, you barely even recognize the sound of your voice at this point.
The only company you have is your dream and nightmares, they both kill you in very different ways, your dreams consist of the life you had before, the people you loved before, the memories of them flashing before you, the way you loved them and their undying devotion to you but your nightmares held the memories of the loss, how you lost them. Fire and Ash coating the realms of your mind, their blood on your hands, the screams encapsulating you, and it seems never ending, was this the life you were meant to have? Was there something more?
You were afraid to find out, the fear of the unknown too great for you now, you craved companionship, but the trepidation was far too great, the hovering possibility of losing them clouding your mind. As you sat with your back to the wall looking through the hallowed hole in the barrier across from you, observing all the constellations of the stars in a sky so far from you, a sky that was unattainable just like the life you had no choice of leaving behind.
The bodies that you have buried deep in the earth's soil, their souls extending out into the celestial body that you've admired your whole life, cradling those you held dear.
The cragged edge of the spear head in your hand grounding you and your nomadic thoughts, a calm wave of acceptance rounding the anger and helplessness that was held hostage in your mind, there was no fighting it, with time it'll pass but the grief will withhold no matter what.
There is no turning back, no going back to the times before, those who were there are no longer meddling on this earth, it will only be you with the burden of moving on.
The chill in the air sends a harsh shiver down your spine, you pull your jacket closer into your body as you lay on your makeshift bed your eyes still graced onto the sky far beyond you, you remember those before you and how he would've wanted you to survive, no matter what it took. Just survive.
°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°
The rays of daybreak skim over your eyelids, the flutter of your eyelashes as you squint brushing the tops of your cheeks, a deep exhale exiting your lungs, the ache of the action traveling through your body as you slowly unwind yourself from the balled up position you fell asleep in.
Another morning, the same routine. Rinse and repeat. While standing you gather the sheet from your corner, rolling it around it around your forearms kicking the remnants of the fireplace over the ledge, watching the burnt coals twirl into the air below, the charred remains disappearing within the winds that blew through. Rinse and repeat.
By the time you've done your routine, the wet sheet sticking to your skin as did your clothes, a new layering of distinct mint covering your scent, you hang the sheet to be dried in your hidden designated spot, out of sight to anyone who may be passing through.
The berries you collected on the way weighed heavy in your knapsack, your stomach rumbling in lingering hunger. You'll head back to your shelter to eat before you did anything else for the day, there wasn't much to do around the area, you've already explored all around the ruins and you've come across all kinds of human trinkets but you didn't care enough to carry them with you.
you didn't have much of a attachment to anything anymore but the spear head that seemed to burn a hole in your pocket, the size of it having a feeling of bigger much than it actually is, it loomed over you like a shadow just waiting to stab in to the tender skin of your palm.. it held more meaning than you actually liked to admit. It was too hard to admit.
When placing your clean sheet in the corner of the room, a huff exudes from your bronchi, and the ache still settled deep within your bones. You can feel the droop of your shoulders as you dig your hand into your new batch of freshly harvested berries, you didn't exactly have a plethora of food options, mainly sticking to the local berries and if you were lucky a fish from the lake.
You have thought of hunting but put it from your mind. It was too risky. The native animals worth hunting for were much too far from the ruins for your liking.
A heaving sigh escapes you as plop a berry into your mouth. This is intensely boring..
The silence encircling you was abruptly broken, voices echoing throughout the cavernous openings of the structures, hurriedly grabbing your belongings you scurry into an ajoin room squeezing into the crawl way with no notice of the missing stone falling from your pocket, the panic grasping onto your senses with merciless vigor.
The resonate voices bounce off your eardrums as you push yourself into the wall behind you, making yourself as small as possible. Here's to hoping you won't be found out. There's no knowing what could come from it.
