Hatsune Miku's character designer (KEI/KeiGarou) has a few Touhou album covers to their name, mostly for the iconic Alstroemeria Records circle!

They also provided another iconic circle with album art: IOSYS for their 2006 album Phantasmagoria Mystical Expectation!

I had to take a few artistic liberties with her design, most notably her knife-wings, as the OG design kinda broke my composition no matter how I went about it xD

I also had to decide where her wings grow from, as that was never disclosed in an official design iirc

Haven't posted anything from my sketchbook recently, so here's a drawing of Byrakuren I did in my sketchbook! I've only drawn her like, once, and that was a long time ago when I did a bunch of face-sketches of the different Touhou final bosses when this blog was still new.

Artist's Notes;

So after I relogged that one post about the hypothetical dynamic between Byrakuren and Zanmu, I started thinking about Byakuren more and decided to get some ideas going about how I'd draw her in my style. In the deep reaches of my mind, I remember seeing this kind of hyper-simplified eye style somewhere before??? (Probably from some of Loish's or Feefal's pieces/styles or in a Disney short or movie, or somewhere IDK but it just has a certain feel to it, you know what I mean?) And I thought "hey, that'd be neat to experiment with" and now I kinda love this kind of style??? Like, I love simplifying things and I really like how Byrakuren's face turned out, so I'm gonna experiment more with this. I also put her in an outfit that resembles her design in the Forbidden Scrollery manga since I like it the most. I've tried a version of this where I drew her in her normal outfit but tbh I didn't like it as much. I also loved using her hair to add to the composition and flow of the sketch, and I added that neat looking emblem on the bottom of her artwork in UFO since I haven't seen people really draw it before. I but a Lotus on top of it too and I think it turned out nicely. Also I put 0 effort into the sigils and details of her scroll, I did NOT feel like meticulously drawing all of those out so I just scribbled random shit in because why not. I've actually got a few other sketches in my sketchbook that I might turn into full-fledged digital pieces and this is definitely a contender for it.

I mainly used filters to help with the colour and lighting, just making stuff more clear, and I think from now on I'm just gonna use clip studio for editing my sketchbook photos because google photos has gotten more and more finnicky with its photo editing stuff. Like, where the fuck is that one function where you can customize which points the crop focuses on to and adjusts from there? Where did it go? Did it get merged into a shitty AI feature? Why can't I see the actions like increasing sharpness on my laptop's version of google photos but not my phone? And like, the unsharp mask tool on CSP is so much better for sharpening the image quality without making it look like I printed it on a shitty school printer that is running low on ink so I think I'll just use that from now on, with the lighting editing being done on my phone.
