So i just watched Kpop Demon Hunters with one of my friends and the Takedown performance scene is done REALLY well.
Its really shows Rumi's professionalism in my opinion. She requested this song would be removed, she genuinly thought it was removed, and then the demons started it regardless to reveal her patterns to Mira and Zoey. Rumi was so confused, but she went along with it anyway
"Why is this song still in? I thought it was removed? Why are they playing it? I thought i said i didnt want to perform it"
"Okay, i guess we're doing it."
And then she just starts dancing along with the demons disguising themselves as Mira and Zoey. Wich by the way, looked like pure muscle memory.
And she looks so uncomfortable all the way trough! I genuinly felt so sorry for Rumi, she had NO idea what was going on 😭
In this clip i just wanted to rip her out of the screen and give her the biggest hug ever
Rumi's body language was also done very well, its subtle but clearly there, you notice that Rumi is uncomfortable and she knows that something is wrong, but she's doing this purely for the audience. People are looking at her, like she can't just get off stage then and there, this is not a practice round and she knows that.
Also, THE FACIAL EXPRESSIONS OF THE CHARACTERS IN THIS MOVIE, OH MY GOD. Its done so realistically. I didnt just feel sorry for Rumi because she's confused and shes basically stuck on the stage with two demons disguising themselves as her two best friends, but also because she feels so real. She feels like a person. Shes despicted so realistically.
I have a thing with any movie or show i watch, and im sure a lot more people have this. Some people like characters unrealistic and wacky, especially in animation, but for me, the more human a character feels (like how they experience emotions, how they react to their surroundings, insecurities etc) the more i can take them seriously. If a character feels fake to me, or unrealistic, i can't really enjoy what i'm watching. I had this with Mighty Monsterwheelies. Bolts felt so bland to me in the first season, he was just a generic main character, he didnt have any flaws and he was just the cool team leader. Then season 2 rolled around, and he starts making mistakes, he starts being depicted with more emotions, for example hes scared, hes sad yk - and he has a role model. He felt more like a person. He felt more human. It makes me able to take him serious and actually enjoy watching him.
This i also had with Rumi. I know what shes going through, and she is depicted with so much emotions, she sounds so scared and fragile in this scene. I got really invested in the scene, i really felt Rumi's panic and the distress that she's in.
But i especially love the clip below, because it imo depicts Rumi's inner demon / her demon side. She's standing like a distressed animal in a cage rather then a human on a stage with the bent back and the pulled up shoulders.
She's so scared, you can very clearly see what she's going trough. There she's standing, on stage, her biggest secret revealed in front of thousands of people by two demons looking like her best friends, shes wearing short clothes showing her demon patterns all over her body, in the spotlight, for thousands of people to see. Nowhere to hide, nowhere to run. Nothing to cover herself up, no one to help her. She is alone in this.
Imagining being in her place is so terrible because she is literally losing everything she worked for in a few seconds. She's becoming the very thing she has been killing all her life, she's becoming something she's supposed to protect people from.
This movie is emotionally so deep and Rumi's story is super interesting. My friends enjoyed it too. I definitley loved it, usually i dont like musicals, but when its well done, you can count on my rewatch
I do think its a little bit overrated but i understand the hype. Super cool movie with a awesome new view on demons. Really cool 🔥
