The Kitto Katto Obsession
It seems like any Singaporean (and I've just discovered, Indonesian too) who visits Japan, comes home with Kit Kat. I usually purchase a box or two of Green Tea/Sakura Green Tea from DFS and give it out to friends and family. But this last trip, I was tasked to find as many different flavours as possible.
Which opened my eyes to the crazy variety of the chocolate wafer out there.
Early on, I saw a special Tochigi Strawberry edition. Knowing I won't be able to get it elsewhere, I bought it. Then I left the rest of my Kit Kat shopping for the last day of my trip... a little too late to discover it was out of stock almost everywhere.
After trawling the supermarkets of Keio, Marui and Lumine in the Shinjuku area and asking information counter girls, I realised that no Japanese really knows much about Kit Kat at all. It's a tourist obsession specifically, the Singaporean tourist's obsession.
I finally managed to get a few boxes at New Days, a convenience store commonly found in and around subway stations. After coming home, I heard from other Kit Kat obssessed fans that these flavours are seasonal. If you missed a flavour, you've missed it forever.
I'll definitely miss Tokyo Rum Raisin and Kuromitsu (Black Honey). Of the bunch, they're my fave.
