I did a quick art print for RF2k18, here’s a preview~ 

Based on “The Epic of Bukalla,” and featuring parts of the poem translated to Old Norse and written in runes in the style of ancient runestones :D

RuneFest photos

As promised, here are the few photos I took while at RuneFest this year.

Simply put, they were purely of other cosplayers.

Someone in Guthan’s armour, with a moving, LED-lit Infernal cape (as shown below)

We met this woman and her friend at the hotel as we were gearing up to head off. She was dressed as a milkmaid, while her friend just had the Gather’s cape, which was fair enough as she’d hurt her hand and hadn’t been fit enough to finish her costume.

This gentleman was the same man we’d met last year, dressed up as Father Aereck. This year, he was a proud Fremennik warrior wearing the Helm of Neitiznot and wielding the greataxe Balmung.

We found another Fremennik warrior, who was clearly being secretly followed by one of those sneaky, sneaky penguins.

And that was all the photos taken at RuneFest, but we also took a couple of photos of ourselves once we got home. So here we are in our costumes.

While I was in my new costume with the khopeshes, Alex wore the Robes of Remembrance and Runecrafting Master skillcape from last year again. 

While he is very happy with the costume I made for him, I keep wanting to challenge myself. Which is why I’m going to make myself another costume next year, though I’m not saying what it’s going to be. After that though, I may pack it in for a while and go to RuneFest either sans costume or go in a previous look.

Finished prop update

As always, details are under the keep reading.

Now, as a reminder, this is the last image I showed:

I then set about covering the whole thing in something that Hobbycraft called “art mache”, but I found it easier to call it paper clay. It was literally powdered paper and wallpaper paste in a bag, all it needed was water.

Dripping my finger in water allowed me to smooth the finish and take off most of the rough edges to it.

On the Khopesh of Tumeken, I very carefully etched the cartouches into the still-wet mache. And when I say carefully, I mean it involved a snap blade and one of my finest sewing needles to pretend I was some old fashioned tattoo artist making everything out of dots.

Once all of that had dried, I added cage prongs to the pommel of the Khopesh of Tumeken. In hindsight, I should have just moulded that at the expanding foam stage, but I was too focused at the time with getting everything else to look good. Due to the size of the prongs in some areas, it took two days to fully dry.

After which, I could move on to the paint base coat.

I went for the most predominant colour on either prop; deep blue for Elidinis and sand for Tumeken. Half the paints I bought were simple gloss paints, while the other half were pearlescent, so I added a pearl medium to my glossy ones to jazz them up a bit.

Then, came the best bit of the paint stage: detailing.

There’s no mid stage picture. The next thing is the final product.

Just look at them. The gold in the etching makes the cartouches pop. The detail I managed with the light blue.

They’re beautiful...

And, here’s a picture of me holding them and looking entirely too pleased with myself.

So, that is those done. Now onto costume.

RuneFest is over for another year

Today was absolutely miserable. It was cold and there was a constant drizzle throughout the whole day.

RuneFest was excellent, though.

We missed the orchestral performance the night before because we got stuck in Friday evening traffic, and by the time we’d gotten to the hotel and had something to eat, we thought we’d missed two or so hours of the performance and decided to get an early night. We found out this morning that it got severely delayed. People weren’t let into the venue until an hour after they were meant to, and the orchestra didn’t start until an hour after that.

We were a bit miffed after hearing that but, ultimately, there wasn’t anything we could do to change what we’d done. I heard it was a great evening, and I’m glad that the people who went to it enjoyed it so much.

But RuneFest itself was great. We had a lot more attention this year over our costumes, and many people were interested in my khopeshes. We hadn’t been aware that we needed to sign up for the cosplay parade, so while we could go on stage and show ourselves off, we weren’t eligible for the cosplay awards. Got a certificate acknowledging and appreciating our work, though, which was nice.

Looks like there’s going to be some interesting stuff coming to the game in the next few months, which is cool. I look forward to playing through the new content.

As people have probably already noticed, I didn’t post a completed cosplay photo post like I said I would. Sorry about that, things got a bit hectic for us. I’ll post pictures of my new costume tomorrow along with the few photos I did take today during RuneFest. I took a few before the event really started, but after the opening/welcome ceremony, I put my camera away and just enjoyed the day.

And lastly, while it would have been nice to stay for the after party, but we were only able to book the one night at the hotel rather than two like other, more organised people. As such, we had an hour and a half drive back home and had to leave at a sensible time.

And that’s it. RuneFest is over for another year. Looking forward to the next one.
