i think the main issue people have is that this whole controversy with taylor swift has been brewing for a while. there's been rumbles for ages about her being more MAGA, except as a bystander it's really difficult to tell what's true about taylor because there's so much propaganda & just straight up misinformation on both sides that it would be a full time job to verify it all, so I think a lot of tayneutral people were giving her the benefit of the doubt until now and tuned out of the discourse.

but because the writing was on the wall, now people are going, well, hayley should've known. i have lots of feelings on this.

arguments for 'hayley knew/should have known'

taylor has been eerily silent on a lot of issues -- unsure how hayley feels about this

it's a whole big event, surely she'd have some idea of the vibe

there has been some mainstream media coverage of taylor's increasingly dubious political affiliation

she presumably has PR people?

if she did know, she might go anyway and lie low to avoid snubbing the industry giant that is taylor, because they're definitely not on the same level anymore and taylor would have a lot of indirect power over venues etc (kind of a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation), plus you don't want to mess with the swifties.

arguments against 'hayley knew/should have known'

i don't think hayley is anywhere near as chronically online as some people think she is in 2026, and i'm unsure how much the discussion of taylor's recent MAGA associations actually spread outside of stan/swiftie spaces?

even if she'd heard, hayley would be inclined to assume the best of her friend, it wouldn't be the first time stans/the media have exaggerated or made things up to drag her (as they've done with hayley in the past)

with over 1k guests it's not certain if taylor communicated with hayley personally at any point on the political alignments of her guests (short of not inviting morgan wallen)

hayley's not with atlantic anymore and so most likely has way less PR people who would normally vet these things

we also haven't fully confirmed she was even there (although we know she was in the area) AND we don't know what she did if she was.

having beef at weddings is tricky because you don't want to make the day about you, even if you really don't like some other guests and aren't afraid to tell them that in a normal context (eg zac's wedding if josh gets invited, hayley almost certainly would not instigate anything despite very publicly having issues with him because it's not about them, it's about her friend).

there's nuance, i have a lot of feelings, i think it's okay to criticise how this was handled without going straight to condemning hayley forever. idk
