Ruse Brewing Dial M for Mosaic Double IPA (Picked up at Windmill Farms). A 4 of 4. As you’d expect, lots of really bright hop notes from the mosaic -- both tropical as well as pine and orange citrus as well. Nice thicker body with a fruity sweetness up front and a firm bitterness throughout. Quite good.
Ruse brewing
It was the best of times; it was the worst of times.
The new-ish Ruse Brewing is currently sharing space with Culmination Brewing. It’s a complicated arrangement, but also the people behind Ruse Brewing work for Culmination? It’s weird. But soon Ruse should have it’s own space. Hopefully, by then they can have all their recipes figured out.
This Architect saison tastes like yeast flavored LaCroix. I’m serious it has zero body. The flavors are great, expressive yeast, fruity and spicy. But it’s like drinking sparkling water. It’s not good.
But I had to try it, because: new brewery, new beer.
One of the great joys of living in Portland, city of a hundred breweries, is that there is always a new beer to try. But on the other hand, there are hundreds of new beers to try, and you can’t try them all. Oh, and some of them are bad.
I’m bombarded daily with press releases and blog posts about this new collaboration and that new release. I know when a new Bell’s shipment lands, I know when a new line is formed for the latest barrel aged limited release. I’m up to date on every brewery opening in closing within a hundred miles. It’s all too much. I can’t do everything all the times, I have a kid and a wife and a small bladder.
The constant fear of missing out is killing my love of beer. Truth be told, I am getting sick of the new IPA. So instead of chasing the next big thing, I’m trying to rediscover beers and styles I already love.
Ruse Brewing Similar Science IPA (Picked up at Windmill Farms). A 4 of 4. My first from Ruse, and this is quite excellent. Lots of orange citrus and tropical fruit in the nose, particularly pineapple, and a very chewy and creamy body. Not overly sweet with a nice firm bitterness in the body alongside some continued fruit sweetness. Very well-balanced and easy-drinking.
Ruse Brewing Star Senders IPA (Picked up at Windmill Farms). A 4 of 4. Yep, this is excellent. Lots of juicy tropical fruit as you’d expect and some berry-like and stone fruit as well. Nice and creamy body with a slightly sweet finish and just a touch of grapefruit pith-like bitterness.
Ruse Brewing Brain Glow IPA (Picked up at Windmill Farms). A 3 of 4. Nice. hazy body and the tropical juice bomb you’d expect in the nose. Drinks with some juicy sweetness too and finishes reasonably dry. This is a good hazy IPA, it just doesn’t particularly stand out of the pack of so many others.

Nestled in the Southeast corner of Portland lies a little brewery shrouded in mystery. Well, maybe not mystery so much anymore as they’ve now been producing super clean, funky, and flavorful beers for a couple of years now. You may have gotten your first taste of them with this year’s release of 3-Way. Yep, we’re talking about Ruse Brewing.
Ruse has been very active in their local creative community to partner with artists and musicians in creating delicious craft beer to pair with their art. Ruse began in the brewhouse of Culmination while its founder searched for a permanent home and to hone his craft. It took a little time, but finally settled in the southeast with a new home and a new partner. Together, they’ve tried to not let themselves be bound by only producing certain styles, rather dipping their toes into the wide gamut of beer out there.
We are incredibly excited to welcome them up to Seattle and to Brouwer’s. We’ll be hosting the brewery on November 15 at 6 p.m. We’ll be tapping the following beers:
Stages of Sundown Imperial Stout with Coffee and vanilla. Pinot Barrel-aged sour ale conditioned on cherries. Dream Language Vienna Style Lager. Collaboration with Our Mutual Friend Brewing. Collective Questions West coast IPA dry hopped exclusively with Mosaic. Translator West Coast IPA Dry hopped with Citra and Mosaic Castle of Goop Hazy DIPA fermented on Peach and Tangerine, Dry hopped with Vic Secret,El Dorado, Motueka and African Queen. Collaboration with Modern Times. Sci Fi Silhouette Hazy IPA dry hopped with Citra, Vic Secret and Topaz.
