Hiii! I love your Russia posts, they're so fascinating for my studies! I am writing a dissertation on national anthems and would like to ask your opinion of the Russian national anthem, how it translates to English, any special references or symbolism or anything else of note you can think of. I am particularly interested in nationalism and how national anthems play into it. Please share with other Russian natives/speakers so I can have more input! Спасибо большой!

Thank you! :D I can’t say that our national anthem (scroll for the lyrics and translation) is nationalist if we understand a nation as a group of people that has a common origin, language, ethnicity, religion and so on. Russia is multinational, some nations living here have in common only the territory (geopolitically) and the language that Soviets made everybody learn, even the peoples living in nearby countries like Kazakhstan xD But in other aspects those nations can be drastically different and of very different origin. You know, there are two words in Russian for ‘Russian’: russkiy as in ‘ethnically Russian’ and rossiyanin as in ‘a citizen of Russia’. That’s why there’s a line: 'Age-old union of fraternal peoples,’ b/c there are LOTS of peoples here (White and Asian), about 200, lots of kinds of rossiyanins, so the anthem is inclusive. It does boost our pride for the country in general, but it isn’t about a specific nation or religion. The word that’s translated as a ‘nation’ in the first line (derzhava) is actually more like ‘a country with a government’. It’s more about our huge territory and how everybody is united here and proud of the country and loyal to it. Mentions of God imply that we’re a religious country and support religion, but the anthem doesn’t say outright which religion, unlike the anthem that was before 1917 (“God save the Tsar” - the hymn of the Russian Empire). The latter says that the Tsar is Orthodox. It’s really is like a prayer, especially the full version! But it was prohibited after the revolution. The word that’s translated as Fatherland in our current anthem is not an indicator of patriachy per se, that’s just a very official, poetic Russian word (Otechestvo), even though the root is ‘father’. It sounds beautiful. That’s what I know :)I have some Russian friends and followers here, maybe they’d like to add more thoughts to this!
