Most Soviet tanks had pneumatic (or air) starters. When you want to start the engine, you open up a valve. Then compressed air rushes into the cylinder pushing the piston down, thus starting the engine. This allowed tanks to operate in -30 degrees of celsius, while other vehicles could not start.
