Some work I found while digging around my archives and this early construction I made after rediscovering my mother’s library of art history books and museum catalogs. It is also a precursor of what is to come as I started my career making large scale constructions influenced by early 20th Century art movements like Cubism, Dada and Russian Constructivism. This assemblage was comprised of colored gels, window screen, a compression spring, architectural texture screen, press type, wood veneer and a perfume bottle. Those elements were arranged on a sheet of glass with a 4x5 camera and 135mm wide angle lens above it. Behind the glass was a piece of milk plexiglass backed by one strobe light fashioned with a beauty dish reflector. The key light was also fitted with a beauty dish and, because we were shooting on a glossy surface, needed to be positioned as not to reflect in the glass surface. We also needed to avert the camera reflecting in the glass surface and used a large black velvet backed card with a hole cut into it for the lens placed between the camera and the assemblage.
