Never wondered before.
One special phrase my grandma and grandfather kept saying when they see the difference between same coloured midle sized socks you put on. The difference goes, if the one of them is worn higher or lower compared to the other one.
-“You have one sock is watching on, the other one keeps stealing”
(rus. Odin karaulit, drugoy voruet.)
Then comes any kind of request: “Put them right or make it same!”
“Where did you learn that?” - once I asked granny.
“Well, my granny used to say that to me” - said granny.
I found the information by using WEB and mainly people in my country are saying this phrase particularly refered to trousers. When one edge of trousers is tucked, looks higher than the other one.
But, I guess, the sock may play an important role. As a result of hurry, a putted wrongly sock makes one edge of trouse appearing in the inner side of sock and thus it looks shorter.
And now I rememered, that my granny and grandfather also said the same about trousers. I believe they (or their parents) broadened the usage of such phrase and it’s quite interesting. It is all about the great folk inheritage.
