The daughter of one Czar and the sister of another, Catherina Pavlovna's impressive pedigree, lively wit and singular beauty assured her a sparkling life. To avoid a proposal of marriage from Napoleon, in 1809, the year of this portrait by Louis Antoine Collas, her mother forced a rushed wedding to her first cousin, Duke George of Oldenburg. When the Duke died after only 3 years of marriage, Catherina became the companion and advisor to her brother, Czar Alexander I. While they were in England, she met the Prince Regent, who instantly proposed. But she also met the married Crown Prince William of Wurttemberg. It was love at first sight. Going to outrageous lengths to be with Catherina, the Prince divorced his wife. But their happy union was short. When she caught William with his former mistress, Catherina fled, perishing from pneumonia in the harsh German winter.
